Wabash Goes 1-2 On First Day of 2025 NWCA / USMC National Duals

Wabash opened the first day of the 2025 National Wrestling Coaches Association / United States Marine Corps National Duals with a 1-2 record. The Little Giants won a tiebreaker in round one against Cornell College before suffering losses to top-ten programs from Wartburg and North Central.

Wabash, ranked 21st in the dual-meet rankings in the latest NWCA coaches poll, faced 24th-rated Cornell in its opener. The Rams scored the first victory at 125 pounds, but Little Giants junior James Day responded by scoring a 4-0 shutout win at 133 pounds. Mason Weyant put Wabash in front 9-5 with a pin at 1:35 in his 141-pound match that would prove to be decisive at the end of the contest.

Cornell regained the lead with a tech fall win at 149 pounds, but Wabash took it back when Daniel Uribe scored a 5-1 win at 157 pounds. The back-and-forth nature of the match continued, with Cornell winning a sudden-victory 4-1 decision at 165 pounds. Jaylen Young put Wabash back in front with his 18-3 tech fall victory at 174 pounds.

The Rams won the next two matches to take a 20-17 lead into the final heavyweight match. Wabash sophomore Titus Waters secured a tie at 20-20 with his 4-1 victory in the heavyweight bout, forcing the tiebreaker format to decide advancement in the team bracket. The Little Giants received the tiebreaker point thanks to Weyant's pin to move into the Division III championship bracket to face the number-one ranked Wartburg Knights.

Wabash got off to a great start against the top-ranked Knights. After Wartburg scored a 4-1 win at 125 pounds, Day picked up an 8-1 decision in his 133-pound match to move to 2-0 for the tournament and tie the score at 3-3. The Knights added a tech fall victory at 141 pounds to claim an 8-3 advantage in the team score.

The Little Giants won the next two matches, with Uribe earning an 11-4 decision at 149 pounds and  Josyah Holland recording a pin at 157 pounds to give Wabash a 12-8 lead. Warburg won the final five matches of the competition to send Wabash to the consolation bracket with a 31-12 final score.

Wabash faced tenth-ranked North Central in the next round. The Little Giants recorded wins by Day at 133 pounds with a 4-2 decision and by Waters at heavyweight in a 4-1 final. North Central won the remaining eight matches to earn a 32-6 decision, sending Wabash to the 13th to 16th-place bracket on Saturday.

Wabash faces the 23rd-ranked program from the University of Olivet at 11 am Central Time Saturday morning. The Little Giants will wrestle either Albion or Luther at 1 pm Central Time to close the tournament.
