James Day earned individual titles to help Wabash finish fourth out of nine teams competing at the 2025 Manchester University Spartan Mat Classic Tournament on Saturday. The Little Giants earned 12 top-eight finishes overall for the tournament.
Day scored four victories, including a first-round tech fall and a second-round pin, to capture the 133-pound weight-class title. He scored a 15-0 tech fall win over Kaleb Salazar from Manchester, then pinned Manchester's Christopher Backus in the first round of their quarterfinal bout. A 13-1 major victory in the semis over Landon Bertsch from Marian University put Day into the finals, where he defeated Indiana Tech's Luke Rioux by a 9-4 score to claim the title.Â
Uribe won all five matches at 149 pounds to claim that weight class title. The senior started with a first-period pin in the opening round against Blake James, then scored a 13-2 major decision over Carlos Santos from Indiana Tech. Uribe won an 18-1 tech fall against Manchester's Oshea Phillips in the quarterfinals, then advanced to the finals with a 10-7 decision over Marian University's Marlin Williams. Uribe captured the weight-class title with a 14-3 major decision over Max Honiss from Albion in the championship match.Â
Nevis scored two major decisions and two tech falls to win the 165-pound weight class title. He started the tournament with a 14-3 major decision against Bode Wilson. Nevis earned a 19-3 tech fall against Manchester's Garrett VonGunten to advance to the semifinal round. Nevis defeated Huntingdon College's Gabriel Sweat with an 18-7 major decision to advance to the finals where earned a tech fall over teammate
Ike O'Neill in the finals. O'Neill took second place after scoring three consecutive decisions in the first three rounds before facing Nevis in the finals to capture second place in the weight class.
Ethan Cooper added a sixth-place finish in the 165-pound bracket after scoring two tech fall victories and a decision for three wins on the day.Â
Mason Weyant scored three wins in four matches to claim second place at 141 pounds. Weyant earned a first-period pin in his opening match, then scored a 16-0 tech fall victory in the quarterfinal round. Weyant added a 6-5 decision in the semifinal round to advance to the championship bout but lost a tough 7-5 decision to finish in second place in the bracket.Â
Anden Ankney won five consecutive matches with four pins and a tech fall after suffering a first-round pin to finish in fifth place at 141 pounds. He scored a 17-1 tech fall victory in the consolation first-round bout, then scored a first-period pin in the next round. Ankney earned a pin in 59 seconds of the consolation third-round match before scoring another first-round pin in the consolation semifinals. Ankney closed the tournament with a pin in 56 seconds of the fifth-place match for his final victory.Â
Andrew Ross picked up four wins in the 149-pound bracket to earn a sixth-place finish. He scored a 16-0 tech fall in the consolation bracket, followed by a 4-2 decision in the next round. Ross added an 11-0 major decision and a 6-0 victory in the next two rounds before a loss in the fifth-place finals match.Â
Josyah Holland picked up a seventh-place finish with three victories, including an 11-2 major decision, at 157 pounds.
Andrew Punzalan earned three victories with two tech falls and a major decision to finish eighth in the 125-pound weight class.
Grant Brewer picked up a pair of wins to finish in eighth place at 157 pounds.
Hadyn Ball scored a 13-3 major decision at 197 pounds to earn an eighth-place finish in that weight class.Â
Wabash finished the day with a total of 124 points. Indiana Tech won the team title with a score of 148 points.Â
The Little Giants host the annual Wabash College Invitational on Saturday, February 1, in the Knowling Fieldhouse beginning at 9 a.m.
