CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. — Wabash carried a one-goal lead into halftime but could not sustain the momentum Saturday afternoon, as Hope College outscored the Little Giants 9-3 over the final two quarters to hand Wabash a 14-9 nonconference setback at Fischer Field at Mud Hollow Stadium.
Wabash (1-3) led 6-5 at halftime but was outscored 9-3 over the final 30 minutes as Hope (1-0) controlled possession and capitalized on key opportunities to secure the win.
Senior midfielder
Austin Clark scored two goals on eight shots to lead the Little Giants, while
Christian Dybedock added two goals and
Jake Pippen finished with two goals on two shots.
Sam Santiago contributed a goal and an assist, and
Will Sorg recorded a goal and an assist.
Hope was paced by Gibson Heethuis, who tallied three goals and three assists for six points, and Preston Hoexum, who scored three times on a game-high 14 shots. Jackson Arnold and Jackson Vasquez each scored twice as the Flying Dutchmen outshot Wabash 48-28, including a 30-19 edge in shots on goal.
The Little Giants struck first when Pippen finished a feed from
Keegan Hatchell at the 10:18 mark of the opening quarter. After Hope answered with back-to-back goals from Hoexum and Jackson Early to take a 2-1 lead, Dybedock scored with nine seconds remaining in the period to tie the game at 2-2.
Hope regained the lead early in the second quarter, but Wabash responded with a three-goal run in a span of just under two minutes. Clark scored unassisted at 10:02, Sorg followed with an unassisted tally at 9:07, and Dybedock converted a pass from Santiago at 8:02 to give the Little Giants a 5-3 advantage.
After Hope trimmed the margin to 5-4, Kerker finished a feed from Sorg with 2:05 remaining in the half to push the lead to 6-4. Hoexum's goal with 50 seconds left before halftime cut the margin to 6-5 at the break.
The momentum shifted in the third quarter. Hope scored three times in a 2:30 span, getting goals from Arnold, Heethuis and Hoexum to turn a one-goal deficit into an 8-6 lead. Wabash was held scoreless in the period despite five shots and a pair of extra-man opportunities.
Hope extended its lead with three goals in the opening 2:11 of the fourth quarter and later added a man-up goal by Heethuis during a two-man advantage to stretch the margin to 12-6. The Flying Dutchmen finished 1-of-4 on extra-man opportunities, while Wabash went 0-for-2.
Santiago halted the run with an unassisted goal at 5:30, and Clark and Pippen each scored in the final three minutes, but Hope answered with a late goal from Vasquez to account for the final margin.
Colin Krekeler made 16 saves in goal for Wabash, including six in the first quarter and five in the third. Hope goalkeeper Jack Balmforth stopped 10 shots to earn the victory.
Hope held advantages in ground balls (48-29), faceoffs (15-26 to 11-26 for Wabash) and committed fewer turnovers (18-21). Wabash was efficient in clearing, converting 21 of 22 attempts, while Hope went 11-for-15.
Wabash returns to Fischer Field next Saturday to host Ohio Northern University at 12 p.m.
