Little Giants Fall to Wooster 10-7 on Senior Day

CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind.— Wabash College celebrated the careers of seniors Jack Bohrer, Lucas Cunningham, Jake Pippen, Bryce Poling, and Sam Santiago on Senior Day, but the College of Wooster spoiled the occasion with a 10-7 victory in North Coast Athletic Conference lacrosse action Saturday afternoon at Fischer Field at Mud Hollow Stadium.

The loss dropped Wabash to 3-11 overall and 1-5 in NCAC play, while Wooster improved to 10-5 and 4-2 in conference action.

Wooster wasted no time taking control, as Jack Holub scored three first-quarter goals — at the 11:35, 5:51 and 4:38 marks — to stake the Fighting Scots to a 3-0 lead. Lane Kellogg assisted on the first and third goals, while Luke Budd set up the second. The third Holub tally came on a power play after a Wabash illegal body check penalty.

Attacker Evan Bair finally got Wabash on the board with an unassisted goal with just 1:19 remaining in the opening quarter, sending the Little Giants to the second period trailing 3-1.

The Little Giants came alive in the second quarter, outscoring the Scots 4-2 to knot the game at halftime. Christian Dybedock scored on a man-up opportunity at the 13:14 mark of the second quarter, and Austin Clark followed with an unassisted even-strength goal at 11:57 to tie the game at 3-3.

Wooster responded quickly, however, as Holub scored his fourth goal of the game at 11:21 on a Kellogg assist, and Austin Jourde made it 5-3 just 37 seconds later at the 10:44 mark, also assisted by Kellogg.

Senior Jake Pippen then answered with back-to-back goals for Wabash, the first at 9:28 of the second quarter on an assist from Dybedock and the second at 3:09 with Clark providing the helper, to tie the contest at 5-5 heading into the break.

The third quarter proved to be the turning point, as Wooster shut out the Little Giants while scoring twice to seize control. Budd scored unassisted goals at the 14:08 and 10:07 marks of the third period to push the Wooster advantage to 7-5.

The Fighting Scots continued to build their lead in the fourth quarter, with Owen Thompson scoring an unassisted goal at 12:47 and Kellogg netting a goal at the 6:46 mark on a Jourde assist to extend the lead to 9-5.

Senior Sam Santiago pulled one back for Wabash at the 3:39 mark with an unassisted tally to make it 9-6, but Wooster's Jesse Fisher answered almost immediately at 2:39, assisted by Kellogg, to restore the four-goal cushion at 10-6. Dybedock added a final goal for the Little Giants at 2:08, assisted by Bair, to set the final margin at 10-7.

Holub led all scorers with four goals on seven shots for Wooster, while Kellogg posted a game-high six points on one goal and five assists with 13 shots and seven shots on goal. Budd added two goals and an assist, and Jourde and Thompson each contributed a goal.

For Wabash, Dybedock paced the offense with three points on two goals and one assist, while Pippen added two goals. Bair and Clark each finished with one goal and one assist for two points apiece, and Santiago scored once.

The Fighting Scots dominated possession throughout, holding a decisive advantage in nearly every statistical category. Wooster outshot Wabash 47-24 overall and held advantages in ground balls (52-37). The Scots won the faceoff battle 11-21 to Wabash's 10-21 and held a 21-24 to 20-28 edge in clears.

Wabash committed 31 turnovers compared to 26 for Wooster.

Wabash goalkeeper Colin Krekeler was a bright spot in the loss, making 18 saves — including seven in the first quarter — on 60 minutes of action while allowing 10 goals. Wooster goalkeeper Case Lowery made five saves over 60 minutes.

Wooster converted one of five extra-man opportunities, while Wabash went 1-for-2 with the man advantage. The Little Giants were assessed five penalties for three minutes, while Wooster was penalized twice for two minutes.

Senior defender Bryce Poling contributed four ground balls and four caused turnovers in his Senior Day performance, while fellow senior Cunningham picked up two ground balls and two caused turnovers.

Wabash returns home Wednesday for a 4 p.m. NCAC contest against Ohio Wesleyan University in the final home match of the season.
