CINCINNATI, Ohio — Wabash scored once in the first half and twice after halftime Wednesday evening to earn a 3-0 non-conference victory over Mount St. Joseph University at Schueler Field.
The Little Giants improved to 8-1-1 while outshooting the Lions 22-7, including a 9-4 advantage in shots on goal. Rafael Cordova made four saves to record the shutout for Wabash.
Zane Biggerstaff gave Wabash a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute with his first goal of the season. Biggerstaff converted a pass from Alfredo Campos at 24:13 for the first game-winning goal of his career.
Wabash controlled much of the opening half, producing eight shots before Biggerstaff's goal. Danny Tkachuk forced Mount St. Joseph goalkeeper Carson Sabers to make a save in the 16th minute, while Cordova stopped Brennan Lewis' attempt at 21:13 to keep the match scoreless.
Campos added two more shots after Biggerstaff's goal as the Little Giants carried the 1-0 advantage into halftime.
Wabash doubled its lead at 58:41 when Colton Hughes-Suiters scored off another assist from Campos. The goal came after the Little Giants generated three corner kicks and forced a save on an Ethan Simmons shot during the opening 14 minutes of the second half.
Tkachuk pushed the lead to 3-0 at 66:31 with his first goal of the season. He finished with three shots, placing two on goal.
Cordova preserved the shutout with three second-half saves, stopping Mount St. Joseph attempts in the 71st, 82nd and 90th minutes.
The Little Giants continued to apply pressure late in the match, producing five shots and five corner kicks between the 81st and 89th minutes. Willer Montesinos recorded two attempts during that stretch, while Blake Horn put a shot on goal.
Campos finished with two assists and a team-high four shots. Biggerstaff scored on his only attempt, while Hughes-Suiters also converted his lone shot into a goal.
Lewis and Presley Boyle led Mount St. Joseph with two shots apiece. Sabers made four saves in 84:49 in goal, while Carson Morgan stopped two shots over the final 5:11.
Wabash returns home Saturday, Sept. 26, to face Principia College at 4 p.m. at Fischer Field.
