After a perfect 3-0 record on Friday, Wabash stuggled with a pair of losses in the semifinals and finals of the 2013 Bud Whitehill Duals to finish fourth in the final team standings. The Little Giants lost to Messiah 20-15 in the semis before dropping a 24-13 to York College in the finals.
Wabash, entering the tournament 14th in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association poll, faced a Knights' squad that had already knocked off one nationally-ranked team on Friday.
Tommy Poynter got the Little Giants off to a good start with a pin 2:09 into his 125-pound bout for a 6-0 lead in the team scoring. Messiah responded with three consective decisions — including a major decision at 141 pounds — to move in front 10-6.
Reece Lefever ended the run with a 7-2 decision at 157 pounds to cut the lead to 10-9.
Ethan Farmer put the Little Giants back in front with a 7-2 victory at 165 pounds and a 12-10 Wabash lead. The Knights came right back with three more decisions, including another major, to move back in front 20-12.
Abe Hall closed out the match with a 3-2 win at 285 pounds.
York raced out to a 17-0 lead through the first four matches of the finals. Lefever final broke the string with a 7-4 win at 157 pounds.
Drew Songer added a 3-2 decision in favor of Wabash at 174 pounds.
Josh Sparks added a 4-2 victory at 184 pounds, with Hall ending the day with an 11-3 major decision at 285 pounds.
The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point defeated Messiah 18-16 in the finals to claim the team title.
Wabash will serve as the host of the annual Max Servies Duals to be held at Chadwick Court Saturday, January 19 beginning at 9 a.m.
