Tommy Poynter and
Reece Lefever posted perfect 4-0 records at Saturday's Chuck Porter Wrestling Duals at Knox College to help Wabash to a 3-1 overall record for the day.
Wabash, ranked 10th in the latest Brute National Wrestling Coaches Association poll, opened with a 57-0 win over the host Knox College team. The Little Giants followed with a 25-12 win over the previously ranked University of Chicago squad. Wabash defeated another previously top-30 ranked team, Loras College, 32-16 in the third round of the duals. The lone loss of the event for Wabash came against 15th-ranked Luther College by a final score of 23-18.
Poynter opened the first-round match against Knox with a technical fall at 125 pounds, outscoring his opponent 15-0 through the first 2:42 of their bout.
Robbie Carter followed with a 12-2 victory at 133 pounds.
Pat Parham scored the first pin of the day in his 141-pound match.
Zach Boren followed with another pin at 149 pounds.
Reece Lefever (157 pounds) and twin brother
Conner Lefever (165 pounds) also scored pins, along with
Ethan Farmer at 174 pounds, giving the Little Giants five consective pins in the competition. Wabash closed out the match with forfeits for
Josh Sparks (184 poinds),
Austin O'Neal (197 pounds), and
Abe Hall (285 pounds).
Wabash opened the second-round match against the University of Chicago with a forfeit for Poynter.
Michael Venezia added a 4-2 victory over Joe Ellis at 141 pounds.
Jake Strausbaugh cruised to an 11-3 win at 149 pounds over Joseph Ruetiger.
Reece Lefever added his second victory of the day with a 9-0 score against Devon Range at 157 pounds.
Conner Lefever scored a 12-2 win over Sam Hopkins at 165 pounds. Hall was the final individual winner for the Little Giants with a 14-5 victory at 285 pounds over Jeff Tyburski.
Poynter picked up another forfeit at 125 pounds to start the match against Loras. Venezia earned his second victory of the day with a pin at 4:24 versus Colin Griffin. Strausbaugh added another pin at the 2:12 mark of his 149-pound bout against Greg Vance.
Reece Lefever improved to 3-0 for the day with a 15-2 decision against Chris Lewis at 157 pounds. His brother, Conner, scored a 12-4 win over Joe Butler at 165 pounds. Mark Meyers won his 184-pound bout with one of the fastest pins of the day, putting Matias Palmershein on his back in just 33 seconds to record the final team points for Wabash against Loras.
The final round showdown between the two 3-0 teams of Wabash and Luther started with a 6-4 victory by Poynter over Nick Scheffert. After a pair of victories by Luther at 133 and 141 pounds, Strausbaugh picked up a 5-1 decision over Chris George o give the Little Giants three points in the team scoring.
Reece Lefever earned his final individual victory of the day by pinning Jake Fox at the 6:44 mark of their 157-pound bout. Luther ran off three more wins at 165, 174, and 184 pounds before O'Neal scored a 3-1 win against Trent Flegel at 197 pounds. Hall closed out the match with a 7-4 victory versus Nick Pearch at 285 pounds.
The Little Giants return to action next weekend when the team will travel to Pennsylvania to participate in the Budd Whitehill Duals at Lycoming College January 11-12.
