DePauw (13-12, 6-4 NCAC West) scored a run in each of the first two innings in game one before Miller settled into a groove. The junior lefty went the distance for his fifth complete game of the season while notching 6 strikeouts. He only gave up 4 hits with just 1 hit coming after the first inning.
“In the first inning, I felt my fastball was up in the zone, but late in the game I was able to 'shoot knees,'” Miller said. “I just got on a roll and built my confidence up.”
Miller made the in-game adjustment to “shoot the knees,” or keep the ball low in the zone.
“I made sure I strode out far enough and was getting on top of the ball—I felt myself falling off sometimes,” he said.
Catcher
Tyler Hampton belted the game-winning RBI on a single to center in the bottom of the fourth. He went 3-for-7 on the day in two games with an RBI and a run.
Pitching struggled in game two for both sides. Wabash starter
Josh Piercey allowed 5 earned runs in 4-1/3 innings pitched while the Tigers' bullpen surrendered 3 earned runs in 3 innings of work.
DePauw used a 5-run fifth inning to burry Wabash in a hole from which it could not dig itself out.
“It was similar to what we've seen many times this season where we had that one inning where we give the other team free outs and free bases,” Coach Cory Stevens said. “When you put those two things together and they're putting the ball in play, it becomes a big inning. The one inning where they put up the five spot was the difference in that second game.”
The Little Giant defense committed 2 errors in the second game along with a couple of misplayed popups. Stevens tried to refocus his team in the midst of the defensive struggles.
“We had the fifth inning where it started with an error at third base and I went to the mound and talked to the guys to keep them relaxed,” Stevens said. “But I can't go out there every time there's an error.”
Clint Scarborough helped keep Wabash in the game from the plate. The sophomore from Texas went 4-for-7 --- including a 3-for-4 effort in game two at the plate with a solo home run to left field in the fifth.
“Last year my parents got to watch a game when we were playing in Texas and I happened to hit a home run then too, so maybe they bring some kind of luck with them,” Scarborough said tongue-in-cheek about his parents making the trek from Texas to watch him play this weekend.
Jack Peck earned the game-two win for DePauw. The lefty threw 6 solid innings and only allowed 2 earned runs while scattering 6 hits.
Wabash (10-13, 2-4 NCAC West) will look to gain ground in the NCAC West tomorrow with another doubleheader at Goodrich Ballpark against DePauw.
“There's pressure every day in conference play,” Stevens said. “It's tough because in a two-day span, your position in the conference can change drastically. There's definitely pressure to come out and get at least one win. If we can get two, that would be great, but we have to get one. That's how we feel at this point.”
First pitch will be at noon Sunday.
