A left arm injury to Wabash first baseman Andrew Rodgers took everyone's thoughts away from baseball Sunday afternoon at Ohio Wesleyan in the second game of the North Coast Athletic Conference West Division contest between the two teams. OWU took a 6-0 win in the finale after the Little Giants won game one 6-4 in nine innings.
Rodgers suffered the injury on a bunt by Aaron Caputo. The throw to first pulled Rodgers' arm into the path of the runner, leading to a dislocated left elbow when the two collided. Ohio Wesleyan, already leading 4-0 at that point of the second game, added two more runs when play was resumed for a 6-0 shutout win. David Oliger picked up two of the Little Giants' four hits against Peter Munger. Robby Hechinger and Clint Scarborough added a hit apiece.
Christian Vukas was tagged with the loss after pitching 2-1/3 innings. He allowed four runs (two earned) on five hits with three walks and a hit batsman. Luke Holm worked the final 3-2/3 innings, giving up two unearned runs on four hits, a walk, and a hit batsman. He also added one strikeout.
Wabash rallied for an extra-innings victory in the opening contest after a 90-minute rain delay prior to the first pitch. The Little Giants used speed on the base paths to disrupt Ohio Wesleyan's defense by picking up two runs on wild pitches with two outs in the ninth for the victory.
Hechinger started the frenzy with a one-out single, then stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by the OWU catcher with two outs. He raced home on a wild pitch to the screen to give Wabash a 5-4 lead. Scarborough walked, then Rodgers laced a double down the left field line to move Scarborough to third. Another wild pitch sent Scarborough home with an insurance run.
Alan Corey, who entered the game in the eighth inning, picked up his first career victory on the mound. He worked two innings in relief while holding the Battling Bishops hitless and allowing two walks along with two strikeouts. Josh Piercey started for the Little Giants, throwing 6-1/3 innings and surrendering four runs on nine hits, two walks, and two hit batsmen. He also struck out three batters. Nelson Novack pitched 2/3 of an inning with two walks and a strikeout.
Wabash scored first in the opening contest on an RBI single by Rodgers, one of four hits for the sophomore in the game. OWU answered with two runs in the third and another in the fourth on a solo home run by James Toland. The Little Giants rallied with a three-run effort in the fifth, starting with a bases-loaded fielder's choice by Scarborough to score Lucas Stippler. A single by Rodgers tied the game at 3-3, then a double-steal by Scarborough and Rodgers drew an errant throw by the catcher to allow Scarborough to score the go-ahead run.
OWU tied the game in the seventh with a bases-loaded walk to force extra innings in the scheduled seven-inning affair.
Hechinger finished with three hits in addition to the four-hit effort by Rodgers. Trey Fankhauser and Hayden Williams each added hits to the totals for the Little Giants.
Wabash (14-22, 6-10 NCAC West) lost three out of four games in the series against Ohio Wesleyan (17-15, 8-8 NCAC West) to finish fifth in the final divisional standings. The Little Giants will close out the NCAC portion of its 2013 schedule next weekend with a three-game series at Hiram College, the fifth-place team from the Eastern Division. Wabash plays at Rose-Hulman May 6 in the season finale.
