Kirill Ivashchenko rallied from a first-set loss to capture the fourth singles victory and give the Wabash College tennis team a 5-4 win over 31st-ranked Denison Friday evening.
Â
The victory is the first for the Little Giants since the two teams first met in 1994. Denison had captured 21 consecutive matches before Friday's win by Wabash.
Â
Ivashchenko dropped the first set 6-1 to Jack O'Koniewski before earning a 7-5 win in the second set. Play moved indoors due to darkness, where Ivashcheko needed one more rally. After O'Koniewski broke serve early in the final set, Ivashchenko broke back to tie the match at 5-5. The two competitors each took the next game to force a tiebreaker at 6-6. Ivashchenko took command early on the way to a 7-2 win in the tiebreaker.
Â
Jordan Greenwell brought Wabash back from a 4-3 deficit in the team scoring by picking up a 6-3, 7-6 (4) win at number three singles.
William Reifeis had little trouble earning a win at number two singles, defeating Jamie McDonald 6-0, 6-2.
Â
Wabash scored a pair of wins in doubles play. Ivashchenko and Greenwell combined for an 8-6 victory at number two doubles.
George Go III and
Mazin Hakim earned an 8-3 win in the third doubles flight.
Michael Makio and Reifeis, ranked sixth in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association Central Region rankings, took on fifth-ranked Kevin Brown and Jackson O'Gorman-Bean. The Denison duo took the number one doubles match 8-3.
Â
The Little Giants (16-11, 1-1 NCAC West) have little time to savor the victory. Wabash returns to action Saturday morning at 9 o'clock against Wittenberg University at home before traveling to Rose-Hulman for a 4 p.m. match.
