Little Giants Run The Table in Servies Duals

Wabash scored a pair of shutouts, including a near-perfect score, as part of four wins Saturday at the 2017 Max Servies Wrestling Duals.

The Little Giants knocked off Calumet College 59-0 prior to a 45-12 victory over Otterbein and a 26-17 win against Heidelberg. Wabash shut out Thomas More College 56-0.

Wabash opened competition by scoring the maximum six points in nine of the ten bouts versus Calumet. The Little Giants received four consecutive forfeits before Connor Guzior pinned his opponent 4:23 into their 157-pound match. Another forfeit at 165 pounds preceded a 19-3 technical fall victory by Darden Schurg for five team points for the Little Giants in the 174-pound match. Wabash closed the match with three consecutive pins, beginning with a fall at 1:35 of the 184-pound weight class contest won by Nick Fox. Riley Lefever also scored a pin at 1:35 of his 197-pound bout. Sam Hipple posted the final pin at 4:48 into the heavyweight match.

"This was a good dual to open with coming off the scales," Wabash head coach Brian Anderson said. "We just told the guys to get out there and get that first match out of the way and get the day rolling."

The Little Giants picked up early wins in its second-round victory After dropping the first bout, Wabash reeled off six consecutive victories. Owen Doster began the string with a 20-5 technical fall in his 133-pound victory. After receiving a forfeit at 141 pounds, Griffin Schermer added five points to the team score with his 18-2 technical fall at 149 pounds. Guzior picked up a pin at 4:19 in the 157-pound match prior to a 23-8 technical fall by Connor Brummett at 165 pounds. Schurg started a run of pins in three of the final four bouts. He scored a fall at 1:14 of the 174-pound bout. Lefever added his second pin of the day with a fall 55 seconds into the 197-pound contest. Hipple grabbed a second pin at 3:43 of the heavyweight match.

"Otterbein is a new program and will compete in our region," Anderson said. "They'll keep getting better and better. It was good to see what they'll bring to the tournament in February."

Wabash faced its toughest test in the third round of the day against Heidelberg. The Little Giants trailed earlier with losses in three of the first four bouts. Doster earned the only victory with a 16-6 major decision at 133 pounds. Guzior scored a pin (5:40) at 157 pounds with Wabash trailing 10-4 in the team score to draw the Little Giants even at 10-10. Brummett recorded a pin (4:12) at 165 pounds to put the Little Giants in front. Schurg added a 10-2 major decision to provide a 10-point cushion. Heidelberg cut into the lead by adding four points at 184 pounds, but Lefever answered with his third pin (3:49) of the day to close out the team victory.

"We knew Heidelberg would be a scrappy team," Anderson said. "We told the guys to not wait around, get to your attacks early and often. It was a good effort for them and a good test for us. We don't want to come into a tournament and just dominate. We want to test our skills and see if we get exposed in certain areas. Heidelberg did a good job in the match."

The Little Giants ended the day with a shutout victory over Thomas More. Allen Betts started the ten-match win for Wabash with a 10-5 decision at 125 pounds. Doster scored a pin (4:16) to go 4-0 for the day. Brice Everson won his 141-pound bout with a pin at the three-minute mark. Schermer added a pin (1:26) Guzior received a forfeit at 157 pounds with Brummett earning a 30-14 technical fall at 165 pounds. Four more forfeits led to the final match of the day — a pin by Hipple at heavyweight for his third victory.

"All of our guys are going the right direction," Anderson said. "We just need to keep doing what we're doing and keep tightening up technique and fixing mistakes. We got a chance against another new program in Thomas More to work on opening up our attacks and build up points."

Wabash will take next weekend off from competition before heading to the 31st John Summa Invitational at Baldwin Wallace University February 4.
