Wabash Earns Eight Top-Six Places at Concordia

Hatch, Bishop Claim Individual Titles

Wabash earned two first-place finishes and a total of eight top-six places at the non-team scoring Concordia University Open in Mequon, Wisconsin. 

Kyle Hatch and Maxwell Bishop both won their individual weight classes. Blake McGee, Gavinn Alstott, Tyson Nisley, Ray Arebalo, Chase Baczek, and James Lewis each captured top-six finishes in their respective weight classes.

Hatch went 5-0 for the tournament with two pins and two technical falls in the 165-pound weight class. He defeated Gabe Fiser from Loras by an 8-3 decision in the title bout to claim the championship.

Bishop also wrestled to a 5-0 record for the day at 285 pounds. He produced a pin in the second round and scored a technical fall in the third round. Bishop won back-to-back decisions, including a 3-1 victory over Cadin Koeppel from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in the finals.

McGee finished in fourth place in the 133-pound weight class with a 4-2 record. He scored victories by technical falls before a loss in the semifinals. McGee won a 10-6 decision against Ethan Pogorzelski of Wisconsin-Whitewater in the consolation bracket before taking a tough two-point loss by a score of 9-7 in the third-place finals bout

Alstott placed fifth overall at 141 pounds for Wabash with a record of 4-2 for the day. He picked up a pin and a victory by decision in his first two matches. Alstott rallied for a 7-3 decision in his first consolation bracket match and finished with a 10-6 win in the finals over Dakarai Clay from Whitewater to place fifth.

Lewis placed fourth overall at 285 pounds. He scored three wins, including pins against Jorge Manjarrrez from Elmhurst and Daniel Landando from Joliet Junior College. Lewis won 2-0 against Jason Nako from North Central before a loss in. the finals provided the fourth-place finish. 

Arebalo earned three victories for the Little Giant to finish in fifth place at 174 pounds. He won by technical fall in his opening bout, then scored a win by decision in the consolation bracket. A loss in the consolation semifinals and a win by medical forfeit in the finals secured a fifth-place finish in the bracket.

Backzek also picked up three wins for a fifth-place finish at 184 pounds. He scored a major decision with a 9-0 shutout score in the second round of the bracket. A 4-2 victory over Giovanni Jackson from Harper College in the quarterfinals sent Baczek to the semis. He answered a 4-1 loss with a 3-2 victory in the consolation bracket before earning a medical forfeit in the finals to capture fifth place. 

Nisley finished in sixth place in the 157-pound weight class bracket. He picked up three victories with a tech fall and two decisions out of six matches overall.

Wabash will host the annual Indiana Little State Tournament on Saturday, December 4 in the Knowling Fieldhouse beginning at 9 a.m.
