Wabash captured four individual titles and 18 top-eight finishes at Saturday's 2022 Spartan Mat Classic held at Manchester University. The Little Giants finished in first place with 189 total points out of 19 teams at the meet.

Kyle Hatch won the 165-pound weight class as the number-one seed, going 5-0 for the tournament with all five wins coming by pins. His first four pins all came in the first two minutes of each match. He pinned second-seeded Chase Schmidt from Wisconsin-Eau Claire at the 4:50 mark of the championship bout to capture the title.
Johnathan Otte added an eighth-place finish for the Little Giants with two pins in the consolation bracket.

Jack Heldt entered the tournament as the top seed at 197 pounds. He won the weight class by going 5-0 for the day. Heldt opened with a 6-0 decision in the first round, then advanced with a 16-0 tech fall to the quarterfinals. He won by pin 3:55 into the quarterfinal bout, then advanced to the finals where he pinned second-seeded Cash Thompson from Ohio Northern in 4:30.
Grant Johnson added a third-place finish in the 197-pound bracket. He recorded three consecutive pins, all in the first period, to move into the semifinal round where he was scheduled to face Heldt. Johnson moved into the third-place bout in the finals where he received a medical forfeit to claim third place.

Maxwell Bishop captured the 285-pound weight class as the top seed in the bracket. He finished the day with a 4-0 record. Bishop started with a 9-2 decision before recording a pin at the 1:48 mark of his quarterfinal bout. A 10-0 major decision sent Bishop to the championship bout where he scored a 2-1 victory over second-seeded Mason Hawkins from Wisconsin-Eau Claire to claim the title.
Isaiah McWilliams earned a fourth-place finish in the bracket. He scored a pin just over a minute into his first match of the day then followed with a 9-2 decision in the semifinals. He lost 3-2 to Hawkins in the semis before a medical forfeit in the title bout dropped him to fourth place.

Daniel Uribe took first place at 141 pounds. He scored a first-round pin before advancing to the semifinals with a 6-4 victory in the quarterfinals. Uribe faced top-seeded Conner Gimson from Indiana Tech in the semis, scoring a 4-3 win to move on to the championship bout. Uribe scored another one-point victory by defeating second-seeded Jacob Reed from Ohio Northern for the title.

Carlos Champagne finished second at 125 pounds for Wabash by finishing with a 3-1 record for the day as the number two seed. He scored an early 4-2 victory ahead of an 18-2 tech fall in the quarterfinals. A 6-4 win in the semis put him in the title bout against top-seeded Jacob Decatur from Baldwin Wallace. Champagne lost 7-2 in the finals to place second overall.
Christian Merrill won three matches with one pin in the 125-pound weight class to finish seventh overall.

Blake McGee and
Rodney Hendricks placed third and fourth, respectively, at 133 pounds. McGee won his first two matches by tech fall scores of 16-0 and 19-2 before a loss in the semis sent him to the third-place bout. Hendricks scored two pins in his opening matches, including a pin with five seconds left in the quarterfinal bout. A loss in the semis put him up against McGee in the final. Hendricks took the forfeit to finish in fourth place.

TJ Driessens captured third place at 149 pounds for Wabash. He scored two pins in the opening period of his first two bouts, then scored a 9-0 major decision in the quarterfinals. An 8-5 loss in the semis sent Dreissens to the third-place bout where he scored a 12-5 decision for the victory.
Cody Snook picked up a seventh-place finish in the 149-pound bracket. Snook scored four wins by pin in the consolation after taking a first-round loss. Included in those wins were pins in the first 36 and 58 seconds of his matches as well as a pin 2:07 into the finals bout to claim seventh place.

Tucker Coffman finished in fourth-place in the 184-pound bracket after winning his first three matches of the day. He started with a 7-0 decision then picked up a pin at the 1:29 mark of his second match of the tournament. Coffman faced top-seeded Bronsen Jewell from Muskegon in the quarterfinals and advanced by pinning Jewell in 1:45. A loss in the semis sent Coffman to the third-place bout, but he was forced to withdraw with a medical forfeit to finish in fourth place.

Ray Arebalo took fifth place at 174 pounds. He scored two early-round wins, including a 21-4 tech fall, then rallied for three consecutive decisions with a 3-2 victory in the finals to earn fifth place overall. Jacob Graden placed eighth overall in the 174-pound bracket. He scored an 8-4 win the championship portion of the bracket and added a 7-3 decision after dropping to the consolation bracket to finish eighth in the finals.

Tyson Nisley scored the final top-eight finish for the Little Giants with an eighth-place effort at 157 pounds. Nisley scored three consecutive wins including a 16-2 major decision and an 8-4 victory in the consolation bracket to earn his top-eight placing.

The Little Giants return home next weekend to host the Wabash Invitational on Saturday, January 22.
