Wabash captured the 2022 NCAA Division III Central Region Wrestling Tournament team title and earned seven spots in the upcoming national championship tournament in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

The Little Giants matched its highest number of national qualifiers with seven wrestlers earning top-three finish at the regional. Wabash sent seven wrestlers to the 2017 national meet, eventually finishing third overall with one national champion and four All-Americans.

Wabash scored a total of 168.5 points to outdistance Baldwin Wallace in second place with 145.5 points. John Carroll took third place with a score of 141.

Maxwell Bishop and
Jack Heldt each claimed individual titles for the Little Giants. Bishop won the 285-pound weight class by finishing the weekend with a 4-0 record including a pair of pins in Friday's first two rounds. He earned a 5-1 victory in the semifinals before capturing the weight class title with a 2-1 decision in the finals. Bishop was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler.

Heldt won the 197-pound weight class with a 4-0 record. He picked up two victories on Friday, then followed with a 9-0 major decision in the semifinals and a 15-0 technical fall in the title bout.

Carlos Champagne will return to the national tournament after placing second in the 125-pound weight class. He advanced to Saturday's final bout with a pin in his semifinal bout, but lost a tight 3-1 decision in the last match of the day.

Daniel Uribe took third place at 141 pounds. He lost his opening match by a score of 602 on Saturday after scoring two Friday victories. Uribe rallied for a 9-7 victory in the consolation semifinals before scoring a 7-6 win to take third place in the bracket and earn a trip to the national tournament.

Alex Barr will also make a return trip to the national tournament after capturing third place at 149 pounds. Barr went 4-0 in consolation-round matches, including two pins and a 6-1 victory in the third-place finals bout.

Kyle Hatch placed third at 165 pounds to earn a fourth trip to the championship tournament. A three-time All-American and the nation's top-ranked wrestler in his weight class, Hatch took a surprising loss in his first bout on Saturday. The senior rallied for an 11-2 major decision in the consolation semifinal bout before earning his trip to Iowa with a 5-3 win in the finals.

Chase Baczek took third place in the 184-pound weight class to earn a trip to the national tournament, as well. Baczek rebounded from a 4-0 loss in the semifinals on Saturday morning by claiming a 7-3 victory in the consolation semis. He scored an 8-0 shutout in the third-place finals bout to claim a spot in the national tournament.

Brian Anderson was voted the region's Coach of the Year after guiding the Little Giants to the team's first regional title since 2019.

The NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament will take place March 11-12 at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids.
