Little Giants Hold Off Rockford For Road Volleyball Victory

The Wabash College volleyball team held off a late rally by the host Rockford Regents to pick up their first win of the season and first of head coach Ashaun Baker's collegiate career. The Little Giants swept Rockford 3-0.

Wabash (1-1) raced out to an early lead in the first set before Rockford (0-1) answered to tie the score at 3-3. The teams played to five more ties in the opening set. With the score even at 8-8, the Little Giants went on a 13-6 scoring run on the way to a 25-17 victory to take a 1-0 lead in the match. The two teams traded the first two points of the second set until Wabash scored three consecutive points and never trailed again to capture a 25-15 win for a 2-0 overall lead.

The Little Giants never trailed in the third set but had to fight off a final rally by the Regents after holding a 21-18 lead. Rockford tied the match at 22-22 until Wabash scored back-to-back points to move to match point. The Regents answered back to tie the score at 24-24 before the teams traded points once again for the sixth tie of the set. Will Beikes gave Wabash a 26-25 advantage with his third kill of the night before an attack error by Rockford gave the Little Giants the 27-25 victory for the three-sets-to-none win.

Jackson Leeper led Wabash with ten kills and a .474 attack percentage. Bawibawi Thang scored eight kills with a .278 attack percentage, and Patrick Volk put away seven kills with a .400 attack percentage. Beikes, who became the first Wabash volleyball player with 1,000 career assists in his last match, scored 28 assists against Rockford. The Little Giants recorded 11 service aces, led by three from Volk. Thang and Christopher Board made seven digs apiece on defense for Wabash.
