PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island --- The Wabash College wrestling team faced three nationally-ranked teams at Saturday's East Coast Duals hosted by Johnson and Wales University. The Little Giants opened with a one-point 17-18 loss to Baldwin Wallace University before a 31-8 loss to the host Wildcats. Wabash lost 24-18 to Castleton in the final match.
 
Wabash entered Saturday's matches ranked 23rd in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association tournament poll and 24th in the NWCA dual team poll. The Little Giants faced seventh-ranked Baldwin Wallace to open the competition. Wabash trailed 6-0 before Mason Weyant scored a 15-4 major decision in his 141-pound bout to trim the Yellow Jackets' lead to 6-4. Daniel Uribe gave Wabash a 7-6 lead with a 5-2 decision at 149 pounds, but BW jumped back in front 13-7 with wins in the next two matches. Jaylen Young scored a 5-3 victory at 174 pounds, and Chase Baczek added a 6-1 win at 197 pounds to cut the Baldwin Wallace lead to 17-13. Titus Waters closed the match with a 4-1 overtime victory in the 285-pound bracket to bring the Little Giants to within a point in the final 17-16 team loss.
 
Wabash faced Johnson and Wales, ranked third in the tournament poll and fourth in the team dual poll. Tim Smith answered a win-by decision for the Wildcats with a 9-1 major decision at 157 pounds to put the Little Giants in front 4-3. Johnson and Wales responded with three consecutive victories before Baczek stopped the run with an 11-3 major decision to cut the Wildcats' lead to 14-8. JWU won the final four matches to claim the 31-8 victory.
 
Wabash got a 15-5 major decision from James Day in the 133-pound bout of its final match against Castleton, ranked sixth in the dual team poll, after the Spartans scored a pin in the 125-pound contest. Uribe cut Castleton's lead to 9-8 with a 16-4 major decision before Smith put Wabash in front 12-9 with a 12-3 major decision. Castleton tied the match at 12-12 with a decision at 165 pounds, but Young put the Little Giants back in front with a 10-8 decision at 174 pounds. The Spartans scored a pin in the 184-pound bout, but Baczek finished the day with a 3-0 record and tied the team scoring at 18-18 with a 12-1 major decision at 197 pounds. Castleton secured the victory with a pin in the heavyweight bout for the 24-18 victory.
 
  Wabash travels to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, after the holidays to compete at the NWCA National Duals January 10-11.
