James Day will represent the Wabash College wrestling team in Saturday's final day of competition at the 2024 NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament. The sophomore won two matches Friday to secure All-American honors while advancing to the championship semifinals.
Â
Day, competing at the NCAA championship event for the second consecutive season, started with a 7-6 decision in the 125-pound bracket over Jalen Dunson from the University of Wisconsin–Whitewater. Day followed with a 5-1 decision in the quarterfinals against Jacob Decatur from Baldwin Wallace.
Â
Day faces top-seeded Joziah Fry from Johnson and Wales in Saturday's semifinal round. A victory would put Day into the evening finals with a chance to wrestle for the Division III national title.
Â
Five other Little Giants wrestlers competed on Friday.
Evan Burge picked up a first-round victory in his 141-pound match against Jacob Dado from the University of the Ozarks. Burge scored a takedown in overtime to earn the 13-10 win. Two losses in the quarterfinals and consolation bracket matches brought his tournament appearance to an end.
Â
Daniel Uribe moved into the second round of the 149-pound bracket with an 8-2 victory over Nate Fitt from the Coast Guard. Uribe lost two close matches in the next two rounds to see his season come to an end.
Â
Tim Smith earned his first trip to the national tournament after winning the 157-pound title at the Central Region Tournament two weeks ago. Smith scored a preliminary-round win with an 11-1 major decision versus Jake Hoffmann from Johns Hopkins. A loss in the next round sent Smith to the consolation bracket, where he rallied with a 6-5 victory over Nate Camiscioli to advance to the next round, where his tournament run ended with a loss.
Â
Chase Baczek entered the tournament as the second seed in the 184-pound weight class, but a loss in the preliminary round and another in the championship first round brought his chase for a third All-American title to an abrupt end.
Â
Saturday's championship semifinal round at the La Crosse Center in La Crosse, Wisconsin, begins at 10 a.m. Central Time. The championship finals start at 7 p.m. Central Time.
