Mequon, Wisc. --- Wabash College recorded five top-six performances Saturday at the non-scoring Concordia (Wisconsin) Invitational, highlighted by runner-up finishes from Andrew Punzalan, James Day, and Jaylen Young.
Punzalan placed second at 125 pounds after opening the tournament with a 15-0 tech-fall win over North Central's Cameron Phillips. He added wins over Wartburg's Kale DiMarco (8-1), Wisconsin–Stevens Point's Luca Paladino (6-4), and Wartburg's Brett Birchman (4-1) to reach the championship match, where he fell 18-2 to North Central's Christian Guzman.
Day also finished second at 133 pounds behind a dominant early run of four tech-fall victories. He defeated Chicago's Youti Wan, Carthage's Chris Kish, TCNJ's Luke Reitter, and Loras' Wiley Jessup by a combined score of 65-1. Day dropped a 4-2 decision to Garrett Totten of TCNJ in the title match.
Young added a second-place showing at 174 pounds. He opened with a 19-3 tech fall over Loras' Jonathon Lamprich, followed by wins against TCNJ's Jordan Ayyash (6-3), Zane Pannell (14-4), and Wartburg's Mike Slade (3-2). Young fell 8-1 to Hunter Mays in the championship bout.
At 184 pounds, Michael Taheny placed fourth. After advancing by forfeit in the opening round, he earned a 10-6 win over Wartburg's Zach Weidler. Following a loss in the semifinals, Taheny rebounded with a 17-3 major decision over Wisconsin–Whitewater's RJ Samuels before dropping his final bout.
Andrew Ross rounded out the Wabash scoring with a sixth-place finish at 157 pounds. He claimed wins over Loras' Alex Bumba (4-1) and Wartburg's Ian Crapp (3-1).
Wabash returns to action Dec. 5 with a home dual meet against Trine University. The Little Giants will honor their senior class prior to the start of the contest.
