Wabash Wrestling Produces Seven Top-Eight Finishes at Greyhound Open

INDIANAPOLIS — The Wabash College wrestling team turned in several strong individual performances Sunday at the Greyhound Open hosted by the University of Indianapolis, with seven Little Giants finishing among the top eight in their respective weight classes. The tournament was contested without team scoring.

Senior James Day led the way for Wabash with a third-place finish at 133 pounds. Day opened the tournament with a 17-0 technical fall over Logan Klinge of Grand Valley State before pinning Ashton Gamboa in 3:54 in the second round. He advanced to the semifinals with a 6-5 tiebreaker decision over Joey Ruzic before dropping a 5-1 decision in the semifinals. Day bounced back to claim third place by pinning Mason Feudale of Grand Valley State in 3:58.

Junior Titus Waters matched Day's placement by finishing third at 285 pounds. Waters opened with a fall over Mateo Armendariz of King in 3:55 and followed with another pin against Evan Grazzini of Bellarmine in 6:32. He advanced to the semifinals with a 4-1 sudden-victory decision over Kevin Zimmer of SIU Edwardsville before closing the tournament with a medical-forfeit win in the third-place bout after taking a loss in the semifinals.

Wabash added a pair of fifth-place finishes at 157, 165, and 174 pounds. Senior Andrew Ross placed fifth at 157 after navigating an extended consolation run. Ross opened with a bye before dropping a 5-3 decision to Elijah Brown of King. He rebounded with a fall over Tommy Reed of Glenville State in 2:45 and followed with a pin of teammate Timothy Sebastian in 1:59. Ross added a 13-0 major decision over Chris Scott of Indiana Tech, then advanced via medical forfeit and a no contest before falling 12-4 by major decision in the consolation semifinals. He closed the tournament with a no contest in the fifth-place match.

Sophomore Cooper McCloy finished fifth at 165 pounds following one of the most productive consolation runs of the day. After a bye, McCloy dropped into the consolation bracket following a first-period fall. He rebounded with a 16-0 technical fall before stringing together four consecutive pins — stopping Drew Trigg of Indiana Tech in 1:37, Kaden Lone of Indianapolis in 0:54, Cael Miller of Bellarmine in 3:36, and Gavin Davis of UIndy in 3:27. McCloy advanced again by no contest before falling by no contest in the consolation semifinals, then secured fifth place by medical forfeit.

Jaylen Young added another top-eight finish for the Little Giants by placing seventh at 174 pounds. Young opened the tournament with a bye before rolling to an 18-0 technical fall over Gabriel Orosco of Quincy and a fall against Chase Leech of Unattached Indiana at 6:53. After a narrow 4-2 decision loss in the quarterfinals, Young rebounded with a 7-2 decision over Mitchell Betz of Manchester and advanced again by no contest. He dropped an 8-0 major decision in the consolation semifinals before closing his tournament with a no-contest victory in the seventh-place match.

Freshman Isaac Ash earned a seventh-place finish at 125 pounds. Ash opened the tournament by pinning Phoenix Sandifer of King in 0:50 and Diego Barajas of Unattached Maryville in 1:51 before dropping a 12-5 decision in the quarterfinals. He responded with a fall over Nick Lawrensen of Thomas More in 1:29 but was edged 5-3 by decision in the consolation semifinals. Ash closed his day with a 16-1 technical fall victory in the seventh-place match.

Freshman Michael Taheny also placed seventh at 184 pounds. Taheny began the tournament by pinning Chris Quarles of Indiana Tech in 2:54, then edged teammate Zach Huckaby by a 5-2 sudden-victory decision in the second round. After a quarterfinal loss by fall, Taheny added a pin over Caden Gousetis of Unattached Maryville in 3:00 before dropping another match by fall in the consolation semifinals. He finished the tournament by pinning Shamon Handegan of McKendree in 6:23 in the seventh-place match.
