EDINBURGH, Ind. —
Finn Carteaux fired an even-par 72 on Saturday to lead Wabash College into second place after the opening round of the Spalding University Timbergate Preview at Timbergate Golf Club.
Wabash's A squad posted a team total of 295 (+7), good enough for sole possession of second place in the 11-team field. Grinnell grabbed the first-round lead at 3-under 285, giving the Pioneers a 10-stroke cushion heading into Sunday's final round. Hendrix and IU Southeast are tied for third at 296 (+8), one shot behind Wabash, while Franklin rounds out the top five at 300 (+12).
Carteaux's even-par 72 placed him in a tie for sixth individually in a field of more than 60 golfers. He shared that position with five other players, including IU Southeast's Westin Allen and Blaine Hamilton, Franklin's Hunter Riggs and Tyler Young, and Earlham's Hayden Chalfant.
The individual lead belongs to Grinnell's Roger Smith, who carded a 4-under 68. Hendrix's Oliver Naumann sits alone in second at 3-under 69, while a trio of players — Grinnell's Spencer Moody and Everett Williams, along with Anderson's Carter Wooddell — are knotted at 1-under 71.
Wabash's
Leo Dellinger turned in the team's second-best score, shooting a 1-over 73 to finish tied for 12th.
Liam McAllister and
Lucas Ranard each shot 3-over 75 to tie for 18th, and their scores both counted toward the Little Giants' team total.
Coen Bauschek rounded out the Wabash A lineup with a 4-over 76, tying for 24th, though his score was dropped as the highest among the team's five counting cards.
Marshall Johnston, also competing for the A squad, carded an 85 (+13) to tie for 55th.
Wabash also entered a B team in the event, which tied for seventh with Anderson (IN) at 310 (+22).
Mason Pierle paced the B squad with a 2-over 74, tying for 15th overall and posting a score that would have been the third-best on the A team.
Charlie Seaburg shot 76 (+4) to tie for 24th, and
Jacob Eble added a 77 (+5) to tie for 27th.
Louis Leon Gryglewski (83, +11) and
Antonio Grandinetti (85, +13) completed the B team's lineup.
Host Spalding finished sixth at 306 (+18), followed by Anderson and the Wabash B team tied at 310. Asbury (318), Earlham (319) and Anderson's B squad (327) rounded out the team standings.
The tournament concludes Sunday with the second and final round at Timbergate Golf Club.
