The Wabash College wrestling team posted wins over Central College, Loras, and Chicago Saturday at the Seventh Annual Chuck Porter Duals at Knox College.
The Little Giants opened the competition with a 25-16 team victory over Central.
Tommy Poynter started the day with an 11- major victory at the 125-pound weight class.
Pat Parham battled to a 5-2 win at 133 pounds, outscoring his opponent with escapes in both the second and third period to secure the win. A 5-3 victory by
Colin Downey at 149 pounds put Wabash in front 10-6, with then increased to a seven-point advantage after a 6-4 win by
Josh Sampson at 157 pounds. Sampson scored the victory with a takedown in overtime to secure the three team points for the Little Giants.
Drew Songer added a 4-2 win at 174 pounds, while
Greg Rhoads battled to a 3-1 victory thanks to a takedown in the third period of his 184-pound bout.
Austin O'Neal locked up the team victory in decisive fashion with a pin 4:48 into his 197-pound match.
Wabash scored a 25-11 win over Loras in round two of th duals. Poynter began with an 8-6 win at 125 pounds.
Garrett Payne added a 10-3 win at 141 pounds by scoring seven points in the final period in addition to getting a point of riding time. Sampson scored a pin at the 4:38 mark of his 157-pound match.
Logan Cooper held on for a 14-11 win at 174 pounds, thanks in part to a pair of early takedowns and a two-point near fall in the first period. Rhoads blanked his 184-pound opponent 4-0, while O'Neal earned a 7-4 win at 197.
Ryan Sandwith wrestled at heavyweight, scoring an impressive 13-3 victory with a trio of three-point near falls in the first two periods.
The Little Giants only team loss came in the third round with a 32-11 defeat to Luther College. Sampson scored the first points for Wabash with a 12-0 major victory at 157 pounds. Songer forced overtime in his 174-pound bout before scoring the two-point victory with a takedown in the extra session. Rhoads added the only other team points for Wabash by cruising to a 13-3 victory at 184 pounds. Luther finished 4-0 for the duals competition to claim the team title.
Wabash responded to the loss with a 22-14 victory over Chicago in the final dual meet of the day.
Josh Boyer picked up an 8-6 win in overtime at 125 pounds. Payne won 13-5 at 141 pounds, while Sampson scored a 7-3 win at 157 pounds to go 4-0 for the day. Rhoads also finished 4-0 individually for the competition by recording a pin at the 4:54 mark of his final 184-pound bout. O'Neal recorded an overtime takedown to win 7-5 at 197 pounds before Sandwith earned the final victory of the day with a 16-12 win at heavyweight.
The Little Giants were one of two teams to finish 3-1 for the day, joining Augustana College with only one loss.
