Jason Hutchison reached the 100-victory mark in his career on Friday with a pair of victories at the North Coast Athletic Conference-Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Challenge held at Oberlin College in Ohio. The Little Giants knocked off Alma 9-0 before defeating Albion 5-1.
Hutchison, in his eighth season as head coach at Wabash, is the second Little Giant tennis coach to reach 100 career victories. George Davis is the all-time leader with a career mark of 185-150 over 19 seasons.
The Little Giants gave Hutchison his 99th victory by sweeping Alma College in the tournament opener.
Wade Miller and
Peter Gunderman won 8-6 at number one doubles.
Daniel Delgado and
Nate Koelper won 8-3 in the second doubles flight.
Ian Leonard and
Evan Bayless scored an 8-4 victory in the third flight.
Miller won in straight sets 6-3, 6-0 at number one singles. Delgado needed three sets before posting a 5-7, 6-1, 10-3 at number two singles.
Gunderman, less than 24 hours after winning the 138th Baldwin Oratorical Contest, picked up a 6-3, 7-6 (4) win at number three singles. Leonard won 6-2, 6-4 at number four singles, while Koelper was a 6-3, 6-2 victory at fifth singles.
Phil Kubisz scored a shutout 6-0, 6-0 win in the sixth flight.
The Little Giants cruised to a victory over Albion in the afternoon session, starting with two wins in doubles. Miller and Gunderman finished with an 8-2 win in the first flight, while Leonard and Bayless added an 8-5 win at third doubles. Miller picked up a default victory at number one single, while Leonard and Kubisz each posted 6-0, 6-0 wins at number four and six singles, respectively.
NCAC teams won seven of the eight matches played on Friday.
The Little Giants improved to 14-8 with the two victories. Wabash will face Hope College on Saturday.
