A 5-3 victory by Wabash over Allegheny College Sunday afternoon in the finals of the 2012 North Coast Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Tournament gave the Little Giants fifth place in the final standings. Wabash defeated Ohio Wesleyan University 5-3 earlier in the day to advance to the fifth-place match.
Wabash opened with a pair of doubles' victories against Allegheny in the finals.
Evan Bayless and
Ian Leonard combined for an 8-5 victory in the third doubles fligh, giving Bayless 68 career wins in doubles play to set a new Little Giants record in his final match. He surpassed the old mark of 67 set by Jay Horrey from 2005-2009.
Daniel Delgado and
Nate Koelper combined for an 8-3 win at number two doubles.
Delgado scored a straight sets 6-4, 6-1 victory at number two singles.
Nate Koelper won 6-4, 6-1 at number five singles. Allegheny rallied for victories at number one and six singles in addition to number one doubles, but
Ian Leonard provided the final team point needed for the victory by rallying for a three-set 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 win at number four singles.
The Little Giants played Ohio Wesleyan Sunday morning in the first round of the consolation bracket after losing 5-1 to Wittenberg in the opening round of the tournament on Saturday.
Peter Gunderman and
Wade Miller combined for an 8-4 victory at number one doubles, the final doubles victory of Gunderman's outstanding career at Wabash. Delgado and Koelper scored an 8-4 win at number two doubles.
Koelper picked up a 6-4, 6-4 win at number five singles, followed by a 7-6, 7-5 win by
Phil Kubisz at number six singles.
Wade Miller secured the victory for the Little Giants with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 win at number one singles.
Wabash finished the season with an overall record of 17-10, the third consecutive winning season for the Little Giants under head coach
Jason Hutchison.
