Box Score The Little Giants' offense came alive over the final 20 minutes for a 63-56 win in Saturday's road North Coast Athletic Conference basketball game at Hiram College. Wabash outscored the Terriers 48-32 in the second half after tallying just 15 points in the opening period.
Trailing 24-15 at the break, Wabash fell behind by 11 points with 17:49 remaining in the game before mounting a rally. A three-pointer by
Ross Sponsler capped a 15-4 scoring run by the Little Giants to tie the game at 32-32. After trading baskets over the next two minutes, Wabash fired off another run — a 12-2 scoring edge this time — to press the lead to 10 points with 7:35 left to play.
Wabash held a nine-point advantage with 2:06 remaining in the game off two
Kyle Aiton free throws. Aiton, Sponsler, and
Marcus Kammrath continued the scoring from the free throw line in the closing minutes to hold off a late Hiram (3-8, 1-3 NCAC) attempted rally.
Turnovers — or more accurately scoring off turnovers — also helped Wabash. The Little Giants only committed nine turnovers in the contest, but converted 14 Hiram mistakes into 13 points.
Aiton led Wabash in scoring with a career-best 22 points. The freshman scored half of his points from the free throw line, connecting on 11-of-14 charity tosses. He shot 5-of-12 from the field, including one three-point shot. Sponsler added 12 points, while
Daniel Purvlicis scored 11 points and grabbed five rebounds. Kammrath led Wabash with eight boards in his first start of the season. The Little Giants were without the services of senior
Pete Nicksic for most of the game. Nicksic suffered a back injury during warmups and played the first three minutes of the game before returning to the bench for the remainder of the contest.
Chris Zurowski led the Terriers with 14 points.
Wabash (2-8, 1-3 NCAC) completes its longest road trip of the season Sunday with a 2 p.m. contest at Allegheny College (3-7, 0-4 NCAC).
