Wabash Tennis Opens 2014 Season With Split

Senior Nate Koelper began the 2014 season with a pair of doubles victories Saturday afternoon. Wabash split two team matches, losing 6-3 to Augustana before earning an 8-1 win against Edgewood.

Wabash traveled to Rock Island, Illinois for a pair of Saturday matches to begin the 2014 spring season. The Little Giants lost 6-3 to host Augustana before scoring an 8-1 win versus Edgewood College in the nightcap.

Senior Nate Koelper and freshman Michael Makio combined for a 9-8 win at number doubles versus Augustana. Makio picked up a 6-2, 7-5 win at number one singles, while fellow first-year player Mazin Hakim scored a three-set win (6-4, 0-6, 12-10) at number three singles.

Senior Wade Miller and Makio captured an 8-6 victory at number one doubles in the second match versus Edgewood. Koelper and Hakim earned an 8-4 win at number two doubles, while Nick Manaudo and Nathan Neal played to an 8-6 win in the third doubles flight.

Miller won in straight sets (6-4, 6-3) at number one singles. Makio dominated his number two singles match with a 6-2, 6-1 victory. Hakim won 6-3, 6-1 at number four singles. Neal cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 win at number five singles. Harrison Shafer closed out the day with a 7-6 (5), 6-3 win in the sixth singles flight.

Wabash (1-1) opens the home portion of the season Wednesday with a match against Franklin College with doubles play set to begin at 5 p.m.
