Hope Takes Flights Over Wabash in NCAC-MIAA Tennis Finale

Freshman Michael Makio scored victories at three singles and one doubles in the Little Giants' 6-3 loss to Hope College in the final match of the NCAC-MIAA Tennis Challenge.

Wabash and Hope battled throughout the opening seven matches of Saturday's North Coast Athletic Conference - Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tennis Challenge before The Flying Dutchmen captured the final three singles flights for a 6-3 victory.

The two teams entered Saturday' last round as the only undefeated teams in the challenge. Wabash had dispatched Calvin and Alma Friday while Hope scored wins over Ohio Wesleyan and Wittenberg.

Wade Miller and Michael Makio took an 8-5 victory at number one doubles. Makio added a third-flight singles win by scored of 6-3, 6-1. Mark Troiano also won in straight sets at number two singles (6-1, 6-2). Hope dashed any title thoughts for the Little Giants with straight-set wins at numbers five and six. The Dutchmen held a 4-3 lead with two singles matches to play. Both flights took three sets to decide before Hope claimed wins and the 6-3 victory overall.

Wabash (11-13) wraps up the regular season this week with matches at DePauw Wednesday afternoon prior to a home finale against Denison Friday at 5 p.m.
