The Wabash tennis team set a new record Friday, winning its 19th match of the season thanks to a pair of wins at the NCAC-MIAA Challenge.
The Little Giants broke the mark of 18 victories set in 2011 by earning victories Friday over Alma College 7-2 and against Calvin College 8-1.
Wabash started the day with two doubles wins against Alma.
Daniel Delgado and
William Reifeis scored an 8-4 win in the first flight, while
Mark Troiano and
Michael Makio posted the same score at number two doubles. Delgado earned his 11th win of the season at number one singles with a straight sets 6-3, 6-3 victory. Makio won 6-2, 6-1 at number two singles, while Troiano was nearly perfect in a 6-1, 6-0 victory in the third flight. Reifeis picked up a 6-1, 6-1 win at fourth singles with
Graham McMullen finishing the match with a 6-3, 6-3 win at number five singles.
The Little Giants' record-setting team win began with Delgado and Reifeis improving to 18-1 at number one doubles with an 8-2 victory. The decision provided Delgado with his 72nd career doubles win, placing one away from Wabash all-time leader Ian Leonard with 73 from fall 2009 to spring of 2013. Makio and Troiano won 8-2 in the second doubles flight. McMullen and
Mazin Hakim won 8-4 at third doubles.
Makio started singles play with a 6-2, 6-0 win in the second flight. Troiano came back in three sets to win at number three singles by a score of 6-1, 4-6, 6-2. Reifeis moved to 14-2 at number four singles and 15-2 overall for the season with his 6-1, 6-3 victory. McMullen cruised to a 6-0. 6-1 win in the fifth singles flight.
Nicholas Pollock added the final team point with a 6-3, 6-3 victory at sixth singles.
Wabash, ranked 11th in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association Central Region poll, will complete the weekend competition with a noon contest Saturday against Hope College, the 2015 Challenge host school.
