Tennis Splits A Pair of Saturday Matches

Wabash split a pair of tennis matches Saturday afternoon at home, losing 5-4 to 39th-ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater before handling Hanover College 8-1 in the evening contest.

The Little Giants came within a point of defeating the Warhawks in a battle of Central Region ranked teams. The duo of William Reifeis and Patrick McAuley scored an 8-6 victory at number doubles over Zane Navratil and Jimmy Englehart. Whitewater captured wins in the other two doubles matches to take a 2-1 lead.

Reifeis posted a 7-5, 6-1 win an number one singles. Jordan Greenwell scored a three-set win number three singles by scores of 6-1, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (3). McAuley added a three-set victory at number four singles (3-6, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (5)).

The match came down to number two singles. Michael Makio was on pace to capture the win, battling to match point despite suffering severe cramping cramping in the late stages of the match. The cramps proved to be too much to overcome, with Whitewater's Englehart eventually winning 6-4, 6-7 (2), 7-6 (2) to earn the win for the Warhawks.

Makio's injury forced a change in the lineup for the Little Giants in the evening match versus Hanover, but it made little difference in terms of the Wabash squad's domination of the visitors.

Reifeis and McAuley won at number one doubles 8-3. Andrew Denning combines with Greenwell at number two doubles to win 8-2. George Go II and Nathan Neal won 8-4 in the third double flight.

Reifeis cruised to a 6-0, 6-4 win at number singles. McAuley added a 6-2, 6-2 victory at number three singles. Kirill Ivahchenko scored a 7-5, 6-2 win at number four singles. Nicholas Pollock captured the number five singles match 6-2, 6-1. Denning completed the 8-1 win with a 6-2, 6-1 victory in the sixth singles flight.

Wabash (8-10) faces Coe College at home next Saturday beginning at 8 a.m.
