Little Giants Move To Fifth-Place Match With Loss at NCAC Tennis Tourney

Wabash played Oberlin to the third set of the final singles match but lost 5-4 to drop to the fifth-place match Saturday at the 2017 North Coast Athletic Conference Tennis Tournament.

The Little Giants took an early lead with wins in two of the three doubles matches. William Reifeis and Patrick McAuley combined for an 8-5 victory in the first doubles flight. Mazin Hakim and Andrew Denning scored an 8-5 victory at number three doubles after Oberlin captured the number two doubles point with an 8-5 win.

Wabash held the 2-1 lead heading into singles play and moved in front 3-1 with a win in the first flight by Reifeis by scores of 6-3, 6-3. Oberlin cut the lead to one point with a victory at number three singles (6-3, 6-2), then tied the team score with a 6-2, 7-6 (5) win at sixth singles. Michael Makio rallied the Little Giants by scoring a three-set 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 rally to put Wabash up 4-3. The Yeomen, 15-9 overall this season and ranked 11th in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association Central Region rankings, score a 6-3, 6-4 win at number four singles before taking a 6-3 lead after the first set at number five singles. The Little Giants won the second set 6-4, but Oberlin took control in the third set to score a 6-1 victory and win the match.

Wabash (11-14), ranked 13th in the Central Region by the ITA and seeded fifth entering the NCAC tourney, plays sixth-seeded Ohio Wesleyan University in the fifth-place match Saturday at noon at Denison University. The Battling Bishops lost 5-1 to third-seeded Denison Friday.
