Reifeis, McAuley Move On To Semifinals After Late Rally Versus Bates

William Reifeis and Patrick McAuley stood on the brink of elimination in their quarterfinal match of the 2018 NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Doubles Championship. The Wabash College duo rallied for a three-set victory and advance to Saturday's semifinal round.

Reifeis and McAuley raced out to first-set victory by a score of 6-2 over the Bates College doubles team of Jacob Kauppila and Ben Rosen. The Bates duo took the second set by a commanding score of 6-1 to even the overall score at one set apiece.

Bates broke Reifeis and McAuley in the opening game of the third set, but the Little Giants broke back and followed by holding serve to move in front 2-1. Kauppila and Rosen stayed even to move the score to 4-4 before breaking serve again to take a 5-4 lead with the serve for a chance to win the match with a victory in the next game.

Reifeis and McAuley stiffened, breaking the Bates twosome to remain alive to tie the third-set score at 5-5. Wabash held its serve, as did Bates in the following game to send the final set into a tiebreaker to determine which team would move on to the semis. Reifeis and McAuley broke Bates once again after trailing 3-1 and 5-3 in the breaker to eventually take a 7-5 win for an overall score of 7-6 in the final set.

The Little Giant duo moves to Saturday's semifinal match against the number one seed in the tournament, Middlebury's Lubomir Cuba and Kyle Schlanger. The match begins at noon (PDT). The winners will play in the championship match at 2:30 p.m. (PDT) against the winner of the other semifinal contest between Scott Rubinstein and James Spaulding from Emory and Tyler Raclin and Jeremy Yuan from the University of Chicago.
