Wrestling Wins 2019 Spartan Classic

Little Giants Capture 14 Top-Eight Finishes

Wabash earned 14 top-eight finishes to capture the team title at the 2019 Manchester University Spartan Classic Saturday.
 
Jared Timberman and Kyle Hatch scored individual weight class titles for the Little Giants. Timberman rolled through the 157-pound weight class with four victories, starting with a 25-10 technical fall over Jaret Lowry from Ohio Wesleyan. Timberman scored a 6-1 victory versus Muzi Siseltha from Wisconsin-Oshkosh. A 16-1 technical fall over Heidelberg's Micah Mydloski moved Timberman to the semifinal round where he scored a 14-4 major decision facing Manchester's Joel Amey. Timberman, the top seed in weight class, defeated second-seeded Brett Johnson by a 10-2 major decision to claim the title.
 
Hatch entered the tournament as the second seed in the 165-pound weight class. He opened with a pin at 2:11 in his match versus Matt Burns from Marian, then picked up a 13-0 major decision over Eric Beck from Bellarmine. Hatch scored a 4-1 decision versus Isaac Collier from Case Western Reserve in the semifinals before defeating Wheaton's Jonavan Huggins by a 13-3 major decision in the finals to win the championship.
 
Daylan Schurg placed third at 165 pounds. He won his first match of the day against Tristan Faworski from Mount St. Joseph 8-5 before receiving a medical forfeit in his scheduled match against top seeded Mark Choinski from Wisconsin-Oshkosh. A loss 7-6 loss to Huggins sent Schurg to the third-place match where he received a forfeit from Collier. Anthony Cicciarelli finished fifth at 165 pounds by scoring a victory over Rahman Johnson from Indiana Tech (13-9) and pins against Alex Henry from Alma (1:44) and Burns (2:20). Cicciarelli defeated Johnson for the second time with a 4-2 decision in the consolation semifinals before scoring an 8-6 win against Beck in the finals.
 
Cade Girgenti placed second at 174 pounds for Wabash. He pinned Blake Machesky from Mount St. Joseph in the first bout of the day, then defeated Wheaton's Stephen Watson 6-5 in the following round. Girgenti added another pin (1:47) facing Adam Green from Baldwin Wallace. Girgenti moved into the championship bout after defeating top-seeded Anthony Walsh from Waynesburg by pin (4:30). The Wabash wrestler lost in a 5-3 decision to Andrew Sams from Bellermine in the title bout.
 
Three Little Giants earned top-eight places in the heavyweight bracket. Wade Ripple finished second after recording three consecutive pins to start the tournament. He defeated Daniel Sheridan from Bellarmine (1:13), Austin Bauslaugh from Macomb (0:25), and Christian Climer fom Heidelberg (1:27). Ripple defeated teammate Maxwell Bishop in the semifinal round 2-0 to face top-seeded Jake Evans from Waynesburg in the championship. Ripple lost 13-4 to finish second overall.
 
Bishop finished third in the bracket. He began the day with a pin at 2:52 in his match against Zach Saylor from Trine, then defeated Brian Stears from Bellarmine 2-1 to advance in the tournament A 7-3 win over Cameron Sauerwein from Mount St. Joseph moved Bishop into the semifinals to face Ripple. After the loss, Bishop scored an 8-2 win in the third-place match against Marian's Ethan Bunce.
 
Jacob Obst finished seventh in the heavyweight bracket after starting with wins over Joe Markham from Davenport (6-4) and Jacob Garrett from Trine (fall 3:29). A 2-1 loss to Bunce dropped Obst to the consolation bracket where he pinned Jarod Miller from Baldwin Wallace 22 seconds into their bout. Obst lost to Stears 3-2 in the consolation semifinals before receiving a forfeit in his seventh-place bout versus Sauerwein.
 
Riley Lomenick finished third overall in the 141-pound weight class. He scored a pin at 5:46 against Kahle Scheenks from Davenport in the first match of the day, then scored 10-2 major decision facing Gavin Foushee from Thomas More in the next round. Lomenick pinned Bellarmine's Alex Rhine (7:15) in the quarterfinals before dropping a 9-6 decision to the eventually champion, Jordan Napier from Manchester. Lomenick defeated Waynesburg's Josh Kuslock 4-0 in the third-place match.
 
Owen Doster and Chris Diaz finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 133-pound weight class. Doster earned three straight pins in the bracket, beginning with his victory over Riley Holsinger from Waynesburg at the 2:45 mark of their match. Doster defeated Andrew Kakoos from Macomb (2:54) in the next round, followed by a pin against Skyler Gomez from Manchester (4:41) before back-to-back losses ended in a fourth-place finish for Doster.
 
Diaz started the day with an 8-4 victory versus Jimmy Murphy from Thomas More before defeating Chris Koetie from Davenport by a 14-1 major decision in the next round. A loss to Charles Nash from Baldwin Wallace sent Diaz to the consolation bracket where he scored wins against Wabash wrestler Caleb Powell (fall 3:33), Leondre Cooley from Mount Union (10-0 major decision) before defeating Wheaton's Ethan Harsted in the fifth-place bout.
 
Chris Wilson tied for sixth place in the 197-pound bracket. He recorded a 9-3 win in his first match of the day against Andrew Bachie from Baldwin Wallace, then picked up wins over Charlie Cadell from Bellarmine (4-0) and Cordell Camp from Trine (4-2). Wilson pinned teammate Alex Dague (1:59) to finish in a tie with Christopher Head from Baldwin Wallace for sixth place. Dague earned three victories over Head (15-6 major decision), Amberger (5-3), and Chase Gibson from Trine (9-7) to finish seventh in the bracket.
 
Kody Wagner added a tie for sixth place in the 149-pound weight class. He lost in the opening round of the bracket before earning five consecutive victories in the consolation bracket to tie with JaVon Phillps from Manchester. Wagner defeated Isaac Nave from Alma (10-3), Corbin Hale from Bellarmine (fall 1:30), and Chase Bates from Mott 16-4 in the semifinals in addition to wins over teammates Maddox Lee and Jacob Stephenson in the consolation bracket.
 
Wabash scored a total of 164.5 points to win the team championship. Wheaton finished second with 118.5 points, while Bellarmine captured third place with a score of 111 points. A total of 22 teams wrestled at the Spartan Classic this year.
 
Wabash will compete against Millikin University at home Monday evening with wrestling set to start at 7 p.m. The Little Giants will honor the senior members of the team prior to the start of the dual meet.
