Week Seven Preview - Wabash at Oberlin

This Week: Wabash (4-2, 4-1 NCAC) travels to Oberlin, Ohio to play the Oberlin College Yeomen (1-5, 1-4 NCAC) on Saturday, October 26 in North Coast Athletic Conference action.

Series History: Wabash and Oberlin meet for the 24th time overall with the Little Giants holding a 20-2-1 lead in the series. Wabash owns an 18-1 mark in NCAC matchups and is 10-1 in games played at Oberlin. The Little Giants trailed 7-0 in last year's meeting between the two teams in Crawfordsville before scoring 32 unanswered points over the final three quarters for a 32-7 victory. The two teams played a back-and-forth affair in Oberlin in 2017 before Wabash scored late in the first half to take a 21-14 lead. A fumble recovery for a touchdown gave the Little Giants a two-score lead early in the fourth on the way to a 35-21 victory.

Rankings: Wabash did not receive any votes in either the D3football.com or American Football Coaches Association polls for second consecutive week despite its 31-13 victory over Wittenberg.

Among The Best: Wabash enters the 2019 season as the fifth-winningest program in NCAA Division III history with a record of 693-390-59. The top-five programs in all-time victories among DIII teams are Mount Union (804), Wittenberg (777), Washington and Jefferson (749), Widener (708), and Wabash (693).
 
Scouting Oberlin: The Yeomen picked up their first win of the season with a 7-0 victory last Saturday versus Hiram. Points have been hard to come by for Oberlin this season. The Yeomen have scored only two touchdowns and a total of 17 points through their first six games.

Senior quarterback Zach Taylor has missed four games but is listed as the starter this weekend against Wabash. He has thrown for 242 yards and one touchdown in two games, completing 27 of 42 pass attempts with three interceptions. Freshman quarterback Chris Allen, Jr. has started the last four games and thrown for 652 yards, including the game-winning score in the win over Hiram. He has completed 70 of his 156 pass attempts and has thrown four interceptions in six games. Brandon Davies is the top receiver for the Yeomen with 32 catches for 299 yards. Brian Colarusso has caught 20 passes for 208 yards and one TD. Tim Martin adds 18 receptions for 148 yards to the Oberlin totals this season.

Kobe Brooks is the leading rusher for the Yeomen. The sophomore has run for 439 yards on 124 carries. Ryan McCrum has rushed 17 times for 76 yards.

While the offense has struggled to put points on the scoreboard, the defense has done its job to keep Oberlin in games this season. The Yeomen lead the conference and rank 35th among Division III teams with nine interceptions this season. The Yeomen are also ranked 16th in tackles for losses with an average of 8.8 per game. Senior linebacker Devin White earned NCAC Defensive Athlete of the Week honors and was named to the D3football.com team of the Week with two interceptions and forced fumble in the win over Hiram. He leads the team with 47 tackles and is tied with Luke Buck and Christian Arnold for the team lead with two interceptions apiece. Jack Lesniak and Zac Ntia each have a team-leading seven tackles for loss, while Lesniak leads the Yeomen with four sacks this season.

Rising Up The Charts: Isaac Avant accounted for 212 all-purpose yards in the Little Giants' win over Wittenberg. He rushed for 146 yards on 25 carries, including a 69-yard run in the fourth quarter to set up a Wabash touchdown to extend the lead to 24-13 with 5:18 left to play in the game. Avant caught three passes for 66 yards which included a 67-yard catch and run for his longest career reception.
Avant moved up one spot to ninth on the Wabash all-time rushing list with 2,428 total yards to tie move past Tim Oliver '91.

DIII Leader: Wabash leads all 247 Division III football teams in net punting yards per game.  The Little Giants average 40.4 yards per punt. Sophomore punter Joey Annee ranks fourth among DIII players with an average of 44.7 yards per punt.

The Inside Edge: Wabash is tied with Denison, Ohio Wesleyan, and Wittenberg for first place in the NCAC standings with identical 4-1 conference records. However, the Little Giants have wins over the other three teams after defeating Denison 34-20 followed by 31-13 wins against Ohio Wesleyan and Wittenberg. Wabash has four game remaining on its regular season schedule starting with this Saturday's contest at Oberlin. The Little Giants close out the schedule with Kenyon and Hiram at home prior to playing the 126th Monon Bell Classic at DePauw University on November 16. 

Next Week: Wabash returns home to play Kenyon College in a 1 p.m. contest at Hollett Little Giant Stadium.
