Wabash Rallies To Finish 3-0 at Johnson And Wales Quad Duals

The Wabash College wrestling team traveled to New Jersey for the weekend to take on three national-ranked opponents at the annual Johnson and Wales Quad Duals held at New Jersey City University. The Little Giants captured wins over Johnson and Wales, Messiah, and the U. S. Merchant Marine Academy to go 3-0 for the afternoon. Wabash needed a late victory in the final match of the day to remain unbeaten for the competition.

The Little Giants entered the day ranked second in the nation in the latest rankings posted on Intermatwrestling.com and fourth in current rankings on the National Wrestling Coaches Association web site, started the day with a 34-12 victory over U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, tied for 17th in the current Intermat rankings. Owen Doster started the match with pin at the 5:31 mark over Jacob Boyd in the 141-pound match. Alex Barr scored a 3-0 decision against Steven Shields at 149 pounds. Austin Bethel won a 12-3 major decision versus Nathan Johnson in their 157-pound bout.
 
Kyle Hatch earned the fourth consecutive victory for the Little Giants with a pin early in the second period (3:25) against Kieran Duggan at 165 pounds. James Cruz scored the first win for the Mariners in the 174-pound bout before Daylan Schurg scored a big 8-3 decision at 184 pounds over Joshua Glantzman ranked second in the nation in the weight class in the latest Intermat poll. Maxwell Bishop pinned Patrick Hume in 1:34 in their heavyweight match. Carlos Champagne picked up a forfeit at 125 pounds to complete the scoring for Wabash in the team victory.
 
The Little Giants wrestled Messiah University in the second match of the day. Wabash defeated the Falcons, ranked 17th in the NWCA poll, by a score of 32-12. Doster once again started the round with a victory at 141 pounds with a 9-7 win against Garret Cornell. Barr scored a 17-0 technical fall against Nick Nunez at 149 pounds. Hatch improved to 2-0 for the day with a 4-0 victory versus Matt Pangle in their 165-pound bout. Darden Schurg scored a pin at the 3:23 mark of his 174-pound match against Brian Shermeyer.
 
Levi Miller earned a third-period pin in his 184-pound match against Joe Embleton, recording the pin at 5:20. Wade Ripple needed just 49 seconds to pin Carter Urich in the heavyweight bout. Champagne once again picked up the final points of the match for the Little Giants with a 7-0 win versus Jordan Howard.
 
The final featured two of the top teams in the national rankings with Wabash facing Johnson and Wales. The Wildcats opened the day ranked fifth in the NWCA poll and tied for 19th in the Intermat listings. The Little Giants opened the round with a 6-2 win by Champagne over Christopher Caban at 125 pounds. JWU took a 4-3 lead with a major decision in the 133-pound match before Doster picked up a 5-1 win at 141 pounds to put Wabash up 6-4. JWU regained the lead with a decision at 149 pounds and added a major decision at 157 pounds to go up 11-6 in the team score.
 
Hatch started the Little Giants' rally with a 13-3 major decision in his 165-pound bout against Christian Murphy. Darden Schurg provided a 16-11 lead for Wabash with a pin at 1:24 in his 174-pound match against Seon Bowker. Consecutive wins at 184 pounds and 197 pounds by Johnson and Wales put the Wildcats in front 17-16 heading into the final match.
 
Bishop came through for the Little Giants with a 4-2 victory at heavyweight to give Wabash the final three team points and a 19-17 victory to finish 3-0 for the day.
 
Wabash improved to 4-0 in dual-meet competition with the wins. The Little Giants' next dual-meet competition will be at the NWCA National Duals to be  held in Louisville, Kentucky, January 10-11.
