Champagne, Hatch Claim Titles at Summa Invitational To Send Wabash To Second Place Overall

Wabash earned 20 top-eight places with two individual champions to place second out of 15 teams at Saturday's John Summa Wrestling Invitational at Baldwin Wallace University.

Carlos Champagne and Kyle Hatch captured individual titles at 125 pounds and 165 pounds, respectively. Champagne opened the tournament with a pin of James Mulenga from Thomas More at 1:51 into their match. Champagne scored a second pin against Devin Hall from Alfred State College with 2:47 expired in the second-round of the bracket. After a major decision score of 10-1 against teammate Kory Cavanaugh in the semifinal round, Champagne defeated Nicholas Berry from Baldwin Wallace 2-0 to win the 125-pound championship.

Cavanaugh place fourth overall in the weight class. He earned a technical fall with a 19-2 victory over Lane Trapp from Lourdes University to start competition, then pinned Parker Rozler from Brockport State University (1:50). His loss to Champagne sent Cavanaugh to the third place match where Cavanaugh lost 10-6.

Hatch started his day with a pin of Tristan Faworski from Mount St. Joseph just 33 seconds into their 165-pound weight class bout. Hatch scored three more pins to win the 165-pound title. He defeated Dan Verhovsek from Waynesburg University (1:57), teammate Daylan Schurg (1:18), and Jimmy Traub from Thomas More (2:10). Schurg finished fourth overall in the bracket. He won his first match of the day with an 8-6 decision over Josh Christner from Thiel College, then defeated Brice Harkness from Wheeling Jesuit 4-2 and Trevor Hoffmier from Oswego State by a score of 2-0 to advance to the semifinals. The loss to Hatch and a tough 4-3 loss to Jordan Hardwick from Ohio Northern University in the finals put Schurg in fourth place overall.

Owen Doster wrestled to second place in the 133-pound weight class. He received an injury default in his first match versus Jahday Daniels from Mount St. Joseph. Doster pinned Kelby Gay from Thomas More 1:57 into their second round bout. A third round win by a 16-0 technical fall against Alex Godinez from Wheeling Jesuit moved Doster into the finals at 133 pounds where an injury forced Doster to medically forfeit to take second place.

Chris Diaz placed fourth at 133 pounds. Diaz scored a 6-2 decision against Anthony Ianno from Oswego State in the first round, then defeated James Brenneman from Ohio Wesleyan University 2-0 to advance to the semifinals. A loss in that round moved Diaz to the third place match where he lost 5-1 to Godinez. Caleb Powell added an eight-place finish for Wabash at 133 pounds with wins over Evan Allen of Thomas More by pin (2:55) and a major decision (9-1) against Ianno.

Ethan Herrin added a second-place finish in the 184-pound weight class to the Little Giants' totals for the tournament. He earned an 8-3 decision against Adam Rigney from Waynesburg University to start the day, then scored a 4-2 win in overtime with a sudden victory against Bryce Rowe from Brockport State. A 14-11 decision versus Dominic Farabaugh from Thiel moved Herrin into the final where he lost a 10-4 decision to Aidan Pasiuk from Wheeling Jesuit.

Wade Ripple wrestled to second place in the heavyweight bracket by scoring three pins on the day. He started with a pin at 2:35 against Kyle Fitzgerald from Alfred State College. Ripple pinned Calik Kennedy in 1:44 in the next round, then scored a pin against teammate Maxwell Bishop five minutes into their quarterfinal bout. Ripple received an injury default in the semifinals but was forced to turn in a medical forfeit to Jake Evans from Waynesburg in the finals to claim second place.

Bishop captured fifth place in the heavyweight bracket for Wabash. He pinned Tanner Six from Waynesburg University (3:44) to begin his trip through the bracket, followed by a pin at 2:57 over Gavin Colligan from Thiel in the second round. After the loss to Ripple in the quarterfinals, Bishop pinned both Ryan Mattison from Alfred State (2:59) and Parker Meaney from Baldwin Wallace (1:45) before scoring a 10-1 major decision versus Seth Bloor from Wheeling Jesuit in the fifth-place bout.

Maddox Lee wrestled to fourth place at 149 pounds. He pinned Tyler Hogue from Wheeling Jesuit (2:20) in the first round, then scored a 6-4 decision versus Nicholas Sbrocco from Baldwin Wallace in the quarterfinal round before a pair of losses in the semifinals and finals earned Lee fourth place. Griffin Schermer finished sixth at 149 pounds for the Little Giants. He opened with a pin at 1:15 against Lucas Olson from Oswego State. A loss in the second round moved Schermer to the consolation bracket where he won four consecutive matches --- two by decisions (6-5 and 6-2) and two by pins --- before he was awarded sixth place by rule in the finals.

Riley Lomenick finished fifth in the 141-pound weight class bracket. He earned a 7-5 victory over Matt Oblock from Wheeling Jesuit in the first round. After a second round loss, Lomenick won five consecutive bouts, starting with a pin of teammate Drew Linder (6:41). Lomenick scored a 9-0 major decision over Wesley Woodworth from Brockport State and received an injury default from Ryan McElwee from Ohio Wesleyan University. Lomenick pinned Brandon Bartlome from Ohio Northern University (5:48) in the semifinals, then was awarded a win by rule against Zack Barker from Brockport State in the fifth-place bout.

Jared Timberman placed fifth at 157 pounds for Wabash. He earned five straight victories in the consolation bracket after suffering a loss in the first round. Timberman pinned Ross Eggleston from Ohio Wesleyan (3:32), Josh Bressette from Oswego State (2:58), and Josh Miller from Thiel College (2:15). Two forfeits in the semifinals and finals put Timberman in fifth place in the bracket.

Kody Wagner scored a 5-3 win over Blake Miller from Wheeling Jesuit in the 157-pound bracket, then added wins over Schuyler Caprella from Ohio Northern (13-7) and Bryce Wittman from Ohio Wesleyan in the consolation bracket. Wagner pinned Zack Brown from Brockport State and added a 4-3 decision against Mike Galton from Alfred State to claim sixth place. Alexander Barr scored four wins in the consolation bracket to earn eighth place at 157 pounds.

Cade Girgenti earned fifth place in the 174-pound weight class. He scored a pin in his opening match against Richard Arciniegas from Lourdes at the 2:48 mark in their match. A loss in the next round sent Girgenti to the consolation bracket where he pinned Dylan Proper from Thiel College (0:51) and a tech fall by a score of 20-3 versus Tim Collins from Brockport State in the semifinals. Girgenti pinned Blake Machesky from Mount St. Joseph at 5:29 in the finals to claim fifth place.

Levi Miller scored three wins against Chris Mueller from ONU (5-1), Alex Dague from Wabash (11-4), and Caleb Garvey from Thiel (9-4) before losing 3-1 in overtime to Joe Yanis from Brockport State to place eighth place at 197 pounds. Chris Wilson was also credited with eighth place at 197 pounds by earning wins against Mueller (7-1), Archie Bachie from Baldwin Wallace (14-4 major decision), and Judens Claude from Brockport State (9-3).

Wabash scored a total of 185.5 points to finish second overall behind Wheeling Jesuit in the final team standings. Brockport State finished third (109 points) and Waynesburg earned fourth place (86 points).

The Little Giants will compete at the Mid-States Championship Tournament at Alma College on Saturday, February 9. Competition begins at 9 a.m.
