Wabash Golf Receives GCAA President's Special Recognition Academic Award

The 2019-2020 Wabash College golf team has been recognized by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) as an All-Academic Team. The Little Giants received the organization's designation of President's Special Recognition with a 3.58 team grade point average.

Wabash was one of only 15 NCAA Division III programs to earn the President's Special Recognition status from the GCAA. To be eligible for the GCAA Outstanding Team Academic honors a college or university must submit GPAs for each player on their official squad list for the academic year. A total of 95 programs from NCAA Divisions I, II, and III as well as the NAIA and NJCAA Division I were named President's Special Recognition teams with GPAs of 3.50 or higher. A total of 250 teams received Academic Team Awards with a GPA of at least 3.0 for the academic year.

"Although the 2019-2020 season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I extremely proud of what this team was able to accomplish both on and of the golf course this year," Wabash head golf coach Tyler Schmutz said. "Our scoring average was 25shots better than it was in 2018-2019. Kyle Warbinton capped off an outstanding career by posting the lowest single-season individual scoring average in program history, and we jumped 64 spots in the Golfstat Division III national rankings.

"While the on course accomplishments were outstanding, the performances in the classroom by the student athletes were remarkable, as well. Three All-America Scholars --- Will Osborn, Sam Wise, and Warbinton --- a team GPA of 3.58, and now garnering the President's Special Recognition as an Outstanding Academic Team from the GCAA is a great honor and makes me very proud as a coach. This award, and the improvement we showed on the golf course in the fall demonstrate the incredible work ethic that we have on our team. It has been a great privilege for me to coach these guys in the short time that I have been fortunate enough to do so, and I look forward to getting back out to compete when we are given the opportunity."
