Alister Newby have joined the Wabash College coaching staff, Director of Athletics and Campus Wellness
Matt Tanney announced today. Bute will serve as both an assistant coach for the Little Giants' football team as well as throwing coach for the Wabash track and field team. Newby will work as an assistant coach with the Wabash soccer team. Both coaches started their duties earlier this month.
Â
Bute comes to Wabash from Duquesne University where he worked from 2016-2020 as an assistant on the track and field team. He helped the Dukes set five university records and post 15 top-five marks. Four of his student-athletes earned all-conference honors along with one NCAA East Regional qualifier.
Â
Bute served as a track and field coach at North Hills High School from 2014-2016. Four of his North Hills' student-athletes set top-five school marks with two sectional meet qualifiers.
Â
Bute is no stranger to competition in the North Coast Athletic Conference. He graduated from Denison University in 2014 as a theater major while also competing in both track and field and football. He earned four varsity letter and capped his career with a seventh-place finish in the shot put at the 2014 conference outdoor track and field championship meet. Bute ranks in the top-five in Big Red history in shot put, discus, and hammer. He also earned two varsity letters as a defensive lineman on the Denison football team. Bute's great-grandfather, Gene Kessler, graduated from Wabash in 1924.
Â
"Joining the football and track teams at Wabash College to me is a great honor," said Bute. "As an alumnus of an NCAC school, I got to see how much work these Little Giants put in on and off the field. Wabash is a first-rate Division III program with a bright future that I hope to aid in some small way."
Â
"We're extremely excited to welcome Coach Bute to the family," Wabash director of track and field and cross country programs
Clyde Morgan said. "John is very passionate about developing the members of our team as phenomenal men first and championship throwers second. He is a very talented and high-energy young throws coach who will fit right in with us. John will not only be a great asset to our athletics department but across campus."
Â
Newby joins the Wabash soccer team after spending four seasons as director of coaching for the Boiler FC program. A 2013 graduate of the University of Central Lancashire with a masters in sports coaching, he also attended Myerscough College where he played soccer for two seasons.
Â
"Joining Wabash is a fantastic opportunity to coach in a very good and accomplished program, learn from a fantastic head coach, and work with a very determined group of young men looking to improve and become better players," Newby said. "I look forward to the challenges ahead and hope I can help bring continued success to the program."
Â
"I am excited to have Coach Newby on staff," Wabash head soccer coach
Chris Keller added. "He stood out from a large pool of solid candidates. Alister's thirst for knowledge, and competitiveness, as well as his knowledge of the game helped him stand out. I am excited to work with Coach Newby as he has already shown great initiative with the guys on the team and in recruiting."
