Wabash Takes Second at NWCA National Duals

Jack Heldt Pins Top-Ranked 197-pounder In Finals

The Wabash College wrestling team earned its best finish at the National Wrestling Coaches Association National Duals Tournament in six seasons, capturing second place at the 2022 event sponsored by the U.S. Marine Corps.
 
The Little Giants lost in the championship match to the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse by a score of 31-9 after defeating the eventual fourth-place team from the Rochester Institute of Technology 24-16.
 
UW-La Crosse, ranked sixth in the latest Intermat Wrestling poll and fifth in the NWCA poll, scored wins in the first five matches. Kyle Hatch captured a 9-2 victory in his 165-pound bout against fifth-ranked Seth Brossard. Jack Heldt provided the final points for the Little Giants when he pinned the top-ranked wrestler at 197 pounds, Isaac Lahr, 59 seconds into the second period.
 
Wabash jumped out to an early 9-0 lead over 13th-ranked RIT in the semifinal round. Carlos Champagne started the match with an 11-2 major decision in his 125-pound bout. Blake McGee followed with a decisive 19-2 win by technical fall at 133 pounds.
 
The Tigers responded with three consecutive wins in the next matches before Hatch stopped the streak with an 11-7 victory in his 165-pound bout. Chase Baczek scored a 5-1 victory at 184 pounds for the Little Giants to cut the team scoring deficit to 16-15.
 
Heldt put Wabash back on top when he scored a pin at 2:01 into the first round of his 197-pound bout to give the Little Giants a 21-16 lead with one match remaining. Maxwell Bishop closed out the semis with a 5-1 win at 285 pounds to send Wabash into the championship match with the 24-16 team victory.
 
Wabash finished in second place at the 2016 National Duals Tournament. The Little Giants added fourth-place team finishes in 2015, 2019, and 2020. Wabash scored a fifth-place in 2014.
