Little Giants Capture Spartan Classic Wrestling Title

Wabash earned 11 top-eight finishes, including three individual champions, to capture the team title at Saturday's Manchester University Spartan Mat Classic. The Little Giants finished first out of 18 teams.
 
Daniel Uribe won the 149-pound weight class with a 5-0 record for the tournament. He defeated Kyron Sank from Huntingdon by a 16-0 technical fall in the opening round, then scored a 22-8 major victory against Zach Haughton of the University of Indianapolis. Uribe picked up an 8-1 win against Jalen King from West Liberty in the quarterfinals before advancing to the finals with an 11-4 victory over Ian Heath from Marian. The finals match ended due to an injury 3:13 into the last bout to give Uribe the weight class title.
 
Mawuli Nevis captured the 165-pound title by going 5-0 on the day. He won his first match with a pin at the 4:02 mark against Colton Blosser of Ohio Northern. Nevis scored a 5-2 victory against Tyler Bodovetz from Ohio Wesleyan. Nevis claimed a sudden victory over Niko Christo from Lourdes University to advance to the semifinals where he claimed a 12-1 major decision against Jordan Fulks from Marian. Nevis won the weight class title with a 9-7 decision over Hunter Kupniewdki of Baldwin Wallace.
 
Jack Heldt won the heavyweight title with pins in each of his five matches. He started with a pin of Nolan Flanagan of Heidelberg 40 seconds into their bout. Heldt pinned Jaylin Harris from Marian in 1:21, then scored a pin of Tarez Russell of Ohio Northern at the 2:17 mark of their bout. Heldt picked up a pin at 1:06 in the semifinals against Andrew Levis of Baldwin Wallace before defeating Jack Haury from Huntingdon by pin at 2:07 of the championship bout.
 
David Gelman finished 3-1 at 133 pounds to place second overall for the Little Giants. He won his opening match against Matt Englehardt from West Liberty by a 13-1 major decision. A pin at 3:25 in the quarterfinals against Gabe Hensen from Ohio Northern moved Gelman to the semifinals, where he won again by pin at the 4:46 mark of his bout against Brandon D'Egidio from Heidelberg. Gelman placed second after a 6-1 loss in the championship bout against Brett Blaess from Baldwin Wallace.

Evan Burge placed third at 141 pounds with three victories in the bracket. He won a 12-6 decision in the opening round over Robert Palmieri from Baldwin Wallace, then defeated Landon Bertsch 9-3 in the quarterfinals. Burge lost the next two matches before rallying for a tech fall with a 16-0 win against Braden Haines from Marian University in the finals to place third.
 
Grant Johnson earned a third-place finish at 197 pounds by winning four matches in the bracket. He started with a pin at 1:12 in his match versus Kelvin Ruffin from Defiance. A 12-1 major decision over Tabor Lock from Indianapolis sent Johnson into the next round where he scored a 9-1 major decision against Alessandro Bruni from Ohio Wesleyan. Johnson followed a loss in the semifinals with an 11-6 decision in the third-place bout over Dakota Veltman from Muskegon Community College.
 
Tyson Nisley scored three wins at 157 pounds to earn a fourth-place finish. He won his opening match with a 5-3 sudden victory against Jacob Horsch from Heidelberg. Nisley defeated Bradyn Rawlins by pinning the Fontbonne wrestler 1:38 into their second-round bout. Nisley won his final match of the day with a 5-2 decision over Breagn Pearson from West Liberty in the quarterfinals.
 
Dylan Barron won three matches at 165 pounds to place fourth overall. He started the day with a 14-3 major decision against Christian Tesnow from Ohio Wesleyan, followed by a pin late in the match (7:36) versus Ellisston Ross from Manchester. Baron scored his final victory of the tournament with a 3-2 decision against Carlos Monroy Santos to claim fourth place.
 
Caden Friedt won three straight bouts to finish fourth at 184 pounds. Friedt scored a 6-4 decision in his first bout against Aidan Petersen from Indianapolis, followed by a 3-0 victory against Will Stewart from Marian. Friedt's final victory of the tournament came in a 3-0 decision against Devontay Moore of Manchester.
 
Ayden Lutes produced six consecutive victories at 149 pounds after an opening-round loss to place fifth in the 149-pound weight class. He started his run with a 5-4 victory against Luke Milanovish from Ohio Wesleyan, followed by a 5-2 win against teammate Phenix Carney. Lutes defeated Keagen Mabie from Manchester 9-3 in the next round, then advanced to the consolation semifinals with a 3-1 sudden victory over King from West Liberty. Lutes defeated teammate Andrew Ross in the semis by a score of 2-1 before scoring a 7-1 victory in the finals against Blaze Garcia from Marian for the fifth-place finish.
 
Ross earned a pin at 2:31 against Claude Buckmaster from Heidelberg to go with two wins by medical forfeit to take an eighth-place finish at 149 pounds.
 
Wabash scored 153.5 points to win the team total, edging Baldwin Wallace in second place with 143.5 points. Marian University finished third with 113.5 points.
