Wabash Finishes Second At 2023 Indiana DIII Meet

Wabash scored three individual victories and 20 top-five finishes with three top-five relay efforts in the opening meet of the 2023-2024 swimming and diving season. The Little Giants finished second out of seven teams competing in the 2023 Indiana Division III Championship Meet held at the Class of 1950 Natatorium on Saturday.
 
Freshman Nicholas Plumb scored an individual victory in the 100-yard backstroke by finishing the race in 53.36. Nick Sommers added a third-place finish with his time of 56.36. Plumb added a second win in the 200-yard backstroke with the top time of 1:58.14. Sommers earned a fourth-place finish in that event with a time of 2:03.80.
 
Quinn Sweeney won the 500-yard freestyle by finishing with the event's best time of 4:58.90. Xander Straw captured second place with his finish of 4:58.95. Straw also placed third in the 1000-yard freestyle by finishing in 10:30.45.
 
Sweeney earned a second-place finish with a time of 1:47.15 in the 200-yard freestyle. Ethan Johns added a fourth-place effort by finishing in 1:48.22. Johns also placed second in the 100-yard freestyle by finishing in 49.25. Connor Craig swam to second place in the 100-yard individual medley, finishing at 57.91. Will Renie scored a fifth-place finish in the 100 IM with a time of 59.24.
 
Justice Wenz placed second in the 100-yard backstroke by turning in a time of 1:01.81. Eddie DaMata completed the 100 backstroke in 1:03.85 to place third overall for the Little Giants. Wenz also placed third in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:19.21. DeMata scored a fourth-place finish with a time of 2:22.47. Wenz also captured third place in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:05.67. Plumb placed fourth overall at 2:05.91.
 
The Little Giants' 200-yard medley relay team of Plumb, DaMata, Craig, and Johns captured second place with a combined time of 1:38.31. The quartet of Sommers, Wenz, Brock Schall, and Daniel Streeter finished in fourth place with a time of 1:42.17. Wabash closed the meet with a second-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The foursome of Sweeney, Johns, John Allen, and Streeter completed the race in 3:17.28.
 
Wabash divers Alexander Aruza and Bernardo Morales earned fourth- and fifth-place finishes in three-meter competition. Aruza placed fourth with a score of 121.5. Morales finished with 105.15 points to place fifth overall.
 
Wabash scored 649.5 points, trailing only Rose-Hulman with 760.5 points in the final men's results. DePauw took third place with 637 points, followed by Franklin (430 points), Anderson (179 points), Manchester (162 points), and Hanover (25 points).
 
Wabash travels to West Lafayette, Indiana, next Saturday to compete at the Indiana Intercollegiate Meet hosted by Purdue University.
