Chase Baczek won five matches to claim the 184-pound weight class title as one of five Wabash wrestlers to earn top-six finishes at the 2023 Concordia University of Wisconsin Open Saturday.
Baczek scored an 18-0 tech fall over John Schmidt from Harper College in the opening round of the bracket, then pinned Concordia's Bryce Claypool in the second round in 31 seconds. Baczek added another shutout victory with a 16-0 tech fall over Wyatt Haynes from the University of Chicago in the quarterfinal round. An 8-0 major decision versus Matthew Doyle from Wartburg in the semifinal sent Baczek to the title match, where he defeated Wartburg's Karey Ross 4-0 in the finals to win the weight-class title.Â
Daniel Uribe captured second place at 149 pounds with four victories in the tournament. He started the day with an 18-1 tech fall win over Sammy Nelson from Wisconsin-Stevens Point, followed by a 17-2 tech fall against Jalin Conner from Wisconsin-Whitewater. Uribe scored an 18-3 tech fall against Cole Ramos from Concordia in the quarterfinals, then defeated Eric Kinkaid from Loras 11-6 in the semifinals. Uribe lost 6-4 to Charlie Dojan from Wartburg in the finals to earn the second-place finish.Â
Ray Arebalo placed second at 174 pounds with three victories. He defeated UW-Stevens Point's Cody Weix with a 16-0 tech fall, then earned another tech fall by a 19-1 score against Hutch Lynott from Chicago in the quarterfinals. Arebalo advanced to the finals with an 8-3 win against Zeb Gnida from Loras before losing 4-0 to Wartburg's Zane Mulder in the finals.Â
Tyson Nisley finished fourth at 157 pounds with a 4-2 record for the tournament. He opened with an 18-2 tech fall over Elmhurst's Charles Gross. Nisley defeated Benny Butler from Harper College 8-0 in the second round, then beat Anthony Ulaszek from Wartburg by a score of 8-5. Nisley lost his first match in the semifinal round but returned to defeat Chicago's Drew Vlasnik 4-1 in a tiebreaker in the consolation semis. A loss to Wartburg's Blain Christie in the finals earned Nisley a fourth-place finish overall.
Blake McGee added a fifth-place finish at 149 pounds. He started with two tech falls with a 15-0 victory against Cale Coppess from Wheaton and an 18-0 win against Xavier Guerrero of UW-Whitewater. McGee scored a 4-1 overtime sudden victory against Chicago's Ryan Fleck in the quarterfinals. After losses in the semifinals and consolation semis, McGee rallied for a 19-2 tech fall over Fleck in their second bout of the day to claim fifth place.Â
No team scoring was kept at the open event.Â
Wabash competes at the annual Indiana Little State Tournament on Saturday, December 2, at Indiana Tech.Â
