Senior Wabash College wrestler
Jack Heldt earned four pins to capture the 285-pound title at Sunday's Greyhound Open hosted by the University of Indianapolis. Heldt's four pins pushed his season total to 24, breaking the Wabash single-season record for pins of 23 set by four-time All-American and Wabash Athletics Hall of Famer Riley Lefever.
Â
Ten Wabash wrestlers, including Heldt, earned top-six finishes at the non-scoring meet.
Â
Heldt competes this season in the 285-pound weight class after earning All-America honors last season with a second-place finish at 197 pounds at the Division III national tournament. He opened Sunday's Greyhound Invitational by pinning Manchester's Victor Lee at the 2:09 mark of their bout. Heldt needed only 49 seconds to pin Tyler Haynes in the quarterfinals before earning a pin in 58 seconds against Caleb Guise from McKendree in the semis. Heldt won the weight class title with a pin at the 1:56 mark of the championship bout against Jacob Telles from King University.
Â
Heldt's 24 pins this season eclipsed the record of 23 pins set by Lefever as a junior. Lefever scored 22 pins in the 2014-15 season, a mark matched by Wade Ripple in the 2018-19 season. At least two tournaments remain on the Wabash schedule for this season. The Little Giants will compete at the Mid-States Invitational on February 11 before competing at the NCAA Division III Central Regional at Case Western Reserve February 25-26. The top-three finishers in each weight class at the Regional Tournament advance to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament set for March 10-11 in Roanoke, Virginia.
