Heldt Breaks Wabash Single-Season Pins Record

Heldt and Nine Other Wabash Wrestlers Earn Top-Six Finishes at Greyhound Invite

Senior Wabash College wrestler Jack Heldt earned four pins to capture the 285-pound title at Sunday's Greyhound Open hosted by the University of Indianapolis. Heldt's four pins pushed his season total to 24, breaking the Wabash single-season record for pins of 23 set by four-time All-American and Wabash Athletics Hall of Famer Riley Lefever.

Ten Wabash wrestlers, including Heldt, earned top-six finishes at the non-scoring meet.

Heldt competes this season in the 285-pound weight class after earning All-America honors last season with a second-place finish at 197 pounds at the Division III national tournament. He opened Sunday's Greyhound Invitational by pinning Manchester's Victor Lee at the 2:09 mark of their bout. Heldt needed only 49 seconds to pin Tyler Haynes in the quarterfinals before earning a pin in 58 seconds against Caleb Guise from McKendree in the semis. Heldt won the weight class title with a pin at the 1:56 mark of the championship bout against Jacob Telles from King University.

Heldt's 24 pins this season eclipsed the record of 23 pins set by Lefever as a junior. Lefever scored 22 pins in the 2014-15 season, a mark matched by Wade Ripple in the 2018-19 season. At least two tournaments remain on the Wabash schedule for this season. The Little Giants will compete at the Mid-States Invitational on February 11 before competing at the NCAA Division III Central Regional at Case Western Reserve February 25-26. The top-three finishers in each weight class at the Regional Tournament advance to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament set for March 10-11 in Roanoke, Virginia.

James Day joined Heldt as an individual champion at 125 pounds at Sunday's Greyhound tournament. Day started his trip through the bracket with a pin at 2:22 against Tyson Upchurch from King. Day scored a 16-4 major decision versus Bryson Rowley from Kentucky Wesleyan in quarterfinals, followed by a pin of Aidan Haggard from Maryville at the 2:09 mark of their semifinal bout. Day defeated Austin Macias from Southern Illinois – Edwardsville in the finals with a 13-2 major decision.

Ray Arebalo scored a second-place finish at 174 pounds. He started the day with a pin 25 seconds into his bout against James Bettcher from Manchester. Arebalo defeated Vincent Galang from King University with a 10-0 major decision in the quarterfinals, then picked up a 6-4 win over Eric Beck in the semis. A 10-3 loss in the finals to Brody Baumann completed the second-place effort for Arebalo.

Chase Baczek added a second-place finish at 184 pounds. He pinned Robert Gurley from the University of Indianapolis in 4:25 before advancing through the bracket with a pin of Dylan Shotwell from Maryville in 2:38. Baczek pinned Porter Keevers at the 4:57 mark of their quarterfinal match before adding an 8-2 win against Purdue University's Mitch Hutmacher. A tough 5-3 loss to SIU-Edwardsville's Deron Pulliam in the finals earned Baczek second place in the bracket.

Daniel Uribe placed third at 149 pounds for Wabash with a record of 5-1 for the tournament. He started the day with an 18-0 tech fall over Drew Willis then pinned Hunter Cottingham from the University of Indianapolis in 2:49 in the next round. Uribe knocked off Purdue University's Christian Navida by a score of 5-2 in the quarterfinals before suffering a loss in the semifnials to move to the consolation bracket. Uribe rallied for an 8-1 win against Southern Illinois University – Edwardsville's Alec Peralta in the consolation semifinals before receiving a bye in the finals to place third overall.

Mawuli Nevis placed third with three wins at 165 pounds. He scored an 11-4 victory in the opening round of the bracket over Luke Leclerc before earning a 16-1 tech fall against Ben Phillips in the quarterfinals. A loss to Purdue's Stoney Buell in the semis came before Nevis defeated Magnus Kuokkanen 4-0 in the consolation semis. Nevis received a forfeit in the finals to capture third place.

Jesse Herrera captured fourth place at 165 pounds. He earned a first-round pin at 3:39 against Jordan Fulks from Marian University, then scored an 11-9 sudden victory against Brandon Lloyd in the quarterfinals. A loss in the semis put Herrera into the consolation bracket where he pinned Ben Phillips in 2:56, but forfeited the finals match to Nevis to claim fourth place.

Evan Burge scored four straight wins after a first-round loss to earn fourth place at 141 pounds. He loast an 11-4 decision to Marian University's Logan Wagner in the bracket's first round, but rallied for a pin (0:35) of Bryan Chavero from Ancilla in the consolation bracket. Burge scored a second pin against Landon Bertsch in 59 seconds of their match, then followed with a pin in 48 seconds against Nico Crosnoe from King University. Burge defeated Hayden Halter 6-4 in the semifinals before dropping a 13-6 decision to Purdue University's Michael Leveille in the finals to earn the fourth-place finish.

Friedt won 8-6 against Devontay Moore from Manchester, then picked up his final win of the day with a 7-2 victory against Ridge Schutte. An injury in the consolation semifinals ended Friedt's run through the tournament.
