Kalamazoo, Mich. — Sophomore
Mason Gilliam delivered a record-setting performance to lead the Wabash College swimming and diving team to a second-place finish at the Kalamazoo College Quad Meet, completed Saturday afternoon at the Anderson Athletic Center Pool. The Little Giants compiled 760 points over the two-day competition to finish behind John Carroll University (1,115 points) and second place Hope College (857 points) and ahead of host Kalamazoo College (358 points).
Gilliam provided a dominant closing day for Wabash, breaking the pool record in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a winning time of 9:52.00 as part of his winning time of 16:21.07 in the 1650 freestyle, touching just 0.5 seconds shy of another pool record. Gilliam picked up a fifth-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly by posting a time of 2:02.22.
Carter Ramsey added a fourth-place finish in the 1650 free for the Little Giants, touching the wall for the final time in 17:28.55.
Wabash picked up several other top-five finishes on Saturday. The Little Giants opened the day by placing fourth in the 200-yard medley relay as
Ryan West,
Lew Sams,
Brody Page, and
Quinn Sweeney combined for a time of 1:35.77.
West continued his strong showing with a second-place finish in the 400-yard individual medley in 4:15.74. He added a third-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke, completing the race in a season-best time of 1:56.62.
Nicholas Plumb took fourth place by finishing in a season best 1:57.16. Plumb scored a fourth-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke at 54.73, also his top mark this season..
Wabash returns to competition next Saturday with a home dual meet against Centre College beginning at noon in the Class of 1950 Natatorium.
