Chicago, Illinois — In a meeting of programs ranked 13th in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association poll, the Wabash College wrestling team delivered several strong individual performances Friday night but came up short in a 24–14 dual-meet loss at the University of Chicago.
The Little Giants won four of the 10 varsity bouts and added multiple victories in extra matches, but Chicago used key bonus-point wins in the upper weights to create decisive separation in the second half of the lineup.
After a sudden-victory loss at 125 pounds opened the evening, Wabash quickly answered at the 133-pound weight class, where All-American
James Day controlled the action from start to finish in an 11–2 major decision over Chicago's Jackson Rustad. The Maroons responded with back-to-back wins at 141 and 149 pounds to build a 10–4 advantage.
Wabash clawed back at 157 pounds as
Andrew Ross turned in a 7–2 victory to keep the Little Giants within striking distance. Chicago stretched the lead with a major decision at 165, but
Jaylen Young delivered one of Wabash's top efforts of the night at 174 pounds, rolling to a 13–4 major decision and trimming the deficit to 14–11.
Chicago secured the dual in the next two bouts, earning technical falls at 184 and 197 to push the margin out of reach. Heavyweight
Maximus Forrester closed the varsity session on a high note for the Little Giants, posting a strong 8–2 win over Edward Perry to finish the scoring.
Wabash produced several additional highlights in the extra matches, including an 18–2 technical fall by
Isaac Ash at 133 pounds and a third-period pin from
Branson Weaver at 149.
Michael Cain also responded with a 6–1 victory in an extra 165-pound bout.
The Little Giants are back on the mat on November 22 at the Concordia of Wisconsin Open Tournament.
