Crawfordsville, Ind. — Wabash College earned 11 top-three finishes, including individual event victories by
Quinn Sweeney and
Ryan West, in Saturday's dual meet against Centre College at the Class of 1950 Natatorium. The visiting Colonels captured the overall team victory, 196–104.
The Little Giants opened the meet with a runner-up finish in the 200-yard medley relay. The quartet of West,
Lew Sams,
Brody Page, and Sweeney combined for a time of 1 minute, 37.59 seconds, finishing just behind Centre's winning relay team (1:35.92).
Sweeney provided the first Wabash event victory of the afternoon by winning the 200 freestyle in a season-best time of 1:47.16. Teammate
William Renie finished second with a career-best effort of 1:48.13. Sweeney later added another win in the 100 freestyle, touching first in 48.17 to set a new season-best mark. Renie earned third in that race at 49.67, another personal-best time.
West delivered a win of his own in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:57.74. He also claimed second in the 100 backstroke (54.03) and later added a runner-up finish in the 200 individual medley at 2:01.69.
Mason Gilliam and
Zach Baty placed second and third, respectively, in the 1,000-yard freestyle. Gilliam finished in 9:59.96, with Baty following at 10:25.28. Gilliam scored another second-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle, touching the wall for the final time in 4:51.34.
Sams scored a third-place finish in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:00.33 and later earned second in the 200 breaststroke (2:13.18).
Nicholas Plumb placed third in the 200 butterfly with a season-best time of 2:02.46 and added a runner-up performance in the 200 backstroke (1:58.01).
Page finished third in the 100 butterfly with a season-best time of 53.04, while
Nate Marshall and
John Allen went 2–3 in the 50 freestyle with times of 22.56—a season best for Marshall—and 22.78 for Allen.
The Little Giants closed the meet with a narrow second-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay. Sweeney, Renie, Plumb, and Marshall combined for a time of 3:16.24, one second behind Centre's winning squad (3:15.24).
In diving,
Fox Seebach placed fourth on both the one-meter (159.05) and three-meter (135.50) boards.
Wabash will host the annual Gail M. Pebworth Invitational at the Crawfordsville High School Aquatics Center Nov. 21–23.
