Huckaby Leads Wabash With Title as Little Giants Earn Seven Top-Eight Finishes at Indiana Little State

Wabash earned seven top-eight finishes with one individual champion at Saturday's non-scoring Indiana Little State Wrestling Tournament. Zach Huckaby picked up the Little Giants' lone title with a win at 184 pounds.

Huckaby won by default in his first match against Brayden Emerine from Indiana Tech, then scored a 6-1 win against Ethan Risner from Manchester. Huckaby faced teammate Michael Taheny, the top-seeded wrestler in the bracket, in the finals and scored a 5-2 victory to claim the weight-class title.

Taheny picked up a 6-0 win in his first match against Justice Goree from Manchester, then pinned Gavin Malone from Trine 5:56 into their second-round match. Taheny knocked off Georgetown (Ky.) wrestler Doug Dittmer to advance to the finals to face Huckaby.

Isaac Ash captured third place in the 125-pound weight class. He entered the tournament seeded second in the bracket and started the day with an 18-0 tech fall over Blaise Perrill from West Liberty. Ash picked up a 16-0 tech fall victory over D'Shaeon Wilson from Indiana Tech in the quarterfinal round but suffered a 9-8 loss to Manchester's Keegan Schlabach. Ash rallied for a 5-4 victory in the finals against Caiden Harbert from West Liberty to claim his third-place finish.

Carson Fettig earned a fourth-place finish in the 149-pound weight class. He opened with a 3-0 victory against Luke Thornton from Lourdes. Fettig pinned Oshea Phillips at the 3:40 mark of their match to advance in the bracket. Fettig scored an 18-3 tech fall over Gabriel Rose from Marian University. Fettig lost to Mike Loney from Indiana Tech in the semifinals before dropping a 9-6 decision to Marlon Kirksy from Indiana Tech in the finals to place fourth.

Teammate Branson Weaver added an eighth-place finish in the 149 bracket. He earned a 15-0 tech fall against Hashim Wordlaw in the first round. Weaver lost in the next round but picked up an 11-5 win against Thornton in the consolation bracket to advance to the next round. Weaver won 3-0 against Terry Easley from Marian in the next round. A loss in the consolation semis gave Weaver an eighth-place finish overall.

Spencer Watson finished fifth at 197 pounds, starting with a pin (4:01) against Talen Garner from Manchester. A loss in the next round sent Watson to the consolation bracket. He advanced due to a medical forfeit, then pinned Joshua McKelvin from Marian at the 2:45 mark of their semifinal bout. Watson picked up his fifth-place finish with a 15-7 major decision over Armen Koltookian from the University of Indianapolis in the finals.

Elorm Nevis added a seventh-place finish for the Little Giants in the 174-pound weight class. He lost his opening match 9-7 but came back with a pin (2:06) of Dylan Goff from Marian-Ancilla in the next round. A forfeit in the next round advanced Nevis to a match against Troy Tobias from Trine, where he scored a 20-3 tech fall to move on in the bracket. Nevis knocked off Ben Shaffer from Trine 7-3 in the consolation quarterfinals, followed by a sudden victory loss (10-7) to Levi Abbott from West Liberty in the semis. Nevis received a medical forfeit in the finals to complete his day of competition.
