Three Titles, Tournament Depth Lift Wabash to Team Crown at Spartan Mat Classic

NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind. — The Wabash College wrestling team crowned three individual champions and placed 10 wrestlers among the top eight to claim the team title Saturday at the 2025 Tom Jarman Spartan Mat Classic, hosted by Manchester University.
 
Wabash College finished first in the 17-team field with 183.5 points, finishing well ahead of Baldwin Wallace (142.5) and Case Western Reserve (127.5). Host Manchester placed fourth with 117.5 points.
 
Heavyweight Titus Waters highlighted the day with a championship at 285 pounds. Waters opened with a 14-4 major decision over Heidelberg's Luke Chambers and followed with a 15-0 technical fall against Thomas More's Diego Pelletier. He edged Marian's Michael Yerian 4-2 in the quarterfinals before advancing with a sudden-victory fall over Baldwin Wallace's Andrew Vanscoy at 6:54. Waters secured the title with a 4-1 decision over Baldwin Wallace's Christian McChesney.
 
Jaylen Young claimed the championship at 174 pounds. Young opened with a 24-17 decision over Baldwin Wallace's Cole Porter and a second-round fall against John Carroll's Niko Kalamaras. He added a 10-1 major decision over Albion's Jack Smith and a 4-1 sudden-victory win against Case Western Reserve's Chase Crutchley in the semifinals before edging Thomas More's Noah Duke 6-5 in the title bout.
 
Zach Huckaby completed Wabash's trio of champions with a first-place finish at 184 pounds. Huckaby began with a 16-1 technical fall over Wisconsin-Oshkosh's Garrett Fuller and followed with a 15-3 major decision against Baldwin Wallace's Benjamin McWilliams. He posted a 13-4 major decision over John Carroll's Wills Bronson in the quarterfinals and a 4-2 decision over Case Western Reserve's Mathew Gummere in the semifinals before earning a 4-2 win over Baldwin Wallace's Remington Bauer in the championship match.
 
James Day finished second at 133 pounds. After a first-round bye, Day recorded a 3:48 fall over Manchester's Nathan Hite, a 15-0 technical fall against Baldwin Wallace's Nathan Moser, and a 1:03 pin of Thomas More's Landon Evans to reach the final, where he placed second following a medical forfeit.
 
Andrew Ross also earned runner-up honors at 157 pounds. Ross opened with an 11-0 major decision over Cornerstone's Dalton Birchmeier and a 15-4 major decision against Thomas More's Thomas Hicks. He added a 6:06 fall over Case Western Reserve's John Conover, defeated teammate Chasen Kazmierczak 8-2 in the quarterfinals, and advanced with a 13-3 major decision over Manchester's Brian Barrett Jr. before finishing second to Case Western Reserve's Thomas Wagner.
 
Spencer Watson earned a second-place finish at 197 pounds with a string of decisive victories on his way to the championship bout. Watson opened the tournament with a 4:00 fall over Heidelberg's Khelei Tillman, then followed with a 15-2 major decision against Case Western Reserve's Norman Boyd in the second round. He continued his run with a 14-4 major decision over Thomas More's Wade Mettling in the quarterfinals before advancing to the final by pinning John Carroll's Juuso Young at the 4:09 mark of the semifinal. Watson finished runner-up after dropping the title match to Baldwin Wallace's Joseph Petrella by technical fall.
 
Carson Fettig earned a third-place finish at 149 pounds. Fettig opened the tournament with a controlled 4-1 decision over Ohio Northern's Gabe Hansen and followed with a dominant 16-0 technical fall against Thomas More's Max Brewer. He advanced to the semifinals with an 8-5 sudden-victory win over Ohio Northern's Max Kaye in the quarterfinal round. After suffering a setback in the semifinals, Fettig responded with a strong consolation performance, closing the tournament with a 16-3 major decision over Case Western Reserve's Robert Minden in the third-place match.
 
Michael Taheny placed third at 184 pounds with an aggressive run through the bracket. Taheny opened the tournament with a 17-1 technical fall over Case Western Reserve's Kodi Pfeiffer before securing a 2:35 fall against Heidelberg's Owen Price in the second round. He followed with another pin in the quarterfinals, stopping Huntingdon's Brock Johnson at the 5:52 mark. After a narrow semifinal loss, Taheny bounced back in the consolation final, earning a 3:52 fall over Case Western Reserve's Mathew Gummere to claim third place.
 
Michael Cain added a sixth-place finish at 157 pounds after a lengthy consolation run. Cain opened with a 17-6 major decision over John Carroll's Drew Connelly and a 3:29 fall against Indiana Tech's Kristian Blake. He responded to an early setback by stringing together four straight consolation wins, including major decisions over Marian's Aaron Durham and two technical falls against Huntingdon's Damion Jones and Manchester's Brady Schiffli, before earning a fall over Marian's Zach Wilson to secure sixth place.
 
Jessie Franklin placed seventh at 157 pounds after a resilient run that included multiple wins on both sides of the bracket. Franklin opened the tournament with a 4-2 decision over Marian's Aaron Durham and followed with an 11-2 major decision against Indiana Tech's Chris Scott to advance into the quarterfinals. After dropping his quarterfinal bout, Franklin responded in consolation action with a tight 4-3 decision over Case Western Reserve's John Conover. He later suffered a setback in the consolation semifinals but rebounded in the placement bout, earning a no-contest victory over Marian's Zach Wilson to secure seventh place.
 
Branson Weaver finished fifth at 141 pounds after a strong performance that included multiple bonus-point victories. Weaver opened the tournament with a 4:51 fall over John Carroll's Will Allen and followed with a quick pin of Joliet Junior College's Aden Vargus just 43 seconds into their second-round bout. After a narrow 3-1 loss in the quarterfinals to Thomas More's Cole Thomas, Weaver surged through the consolation bracket. He posted a dominant 17-0 technical fall against Wisconsin-Oshkosh's Logan Harel, then secured a 2:43 fall over Case Western Reserve's Michael Valerino in the consolation semifinals. Weaver closed the day by winning the fifth-place match by forfeit.
 
The Little Giants will host the annual Wabash College Wrestling Invitational at the Knowling Fieldhouse next Saturday beginning at 9 a.m.
