Vaught Earns NCAC Newcomer of the Year Honors; Wabash Places Sixth at Conference Championships

OBERLIN, Ohio — Wabash College sophomore Sam Vaught earned North Coast Athletic Conference Men's Cross Country Newcomer of the Year honors with a fourth-place individual finish Saturday at the 2026 NCAC Cross Country Championships. Vaught led the Little Giants to a sixth-place team finish with 161 points as every Wabash runner who completed the 8,000-meter race established a career-best time.

Vaught completed the championship course in 25:10.3 seconds, finishing fourth among 98 competitors and earning four points toward the Wabash team total. His performance earned him NCAC Newcomer of the Year recognition as the highest-finishing first-year conference competitor. Vaught also secured First Team All-NCAC honors with his top-seven finish.

Vaught's time was a season-best performance, improving his previous fastest 8,000-meter mark of 25:31.1 set at the Greater Louisville Cross Country Classic on Oct. 3. His championship effort lowered that mark by 20.8 seconds.

Cooper Knoblauch and Johnathan Loney provided the next two scoring finishes for Wabash, crossing the finish line less than a second apart. Knoblauch placed 30th overall in a career-best time of 26:31.6, scoring 29 points for the Little Giants. Loney followed in 31st place with a career-best effort of 26:32.5, contributing 30 points.

Raul Delgado finished 67th overall with a personal-best time of 27:51.6, adding 48 points to the Wabash team score. Austin Baugh completed the Little Giants' five scoring positions with a 69th-place finish in a career-best 28:07.2, contributing 50 points.

Owen Dilley and Evan Shupe rounded out the Little Giants' top seven finishers. Dilley placed 80th with a career-best time of 28:51.9, while Shupe followed in 81st place in a personal-best 28:57.7.

Malcolm Cruz finished 84th in 29:17.4, followed by Kaiden McGuire in 86th place at 29:28.1 and Nathan Hollcraft in 87th at 29:32.6. Austin Jewell completed the race in 93rd place with a time of 30:30.1. All four runners also recorded career-best performances.

John Carroll University captured the conference team championship with 36 points, followed by Denison University in second place with 68. DePauw University finished third with 93 points, Kenyon College placed fourth with 100, and host Oberlin College took fifth with 140. Wabash finished sixth with 161 points, six points ahead of seventh-place Wittenberg University.

John Carroll's Sam Su won the individual conference championship with a time of 24:37.8.

Wabash returns to competition Saturday, Nov. 14, at the NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional Championships in East Lansing, Michigan. The men's 8,000-meter race is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
