Carpenter, who took the reigns after
Mac Petty retired after 35 seasons at the helm of the Wabash program, put his stamp on this team with a high-speed offensive attack that raced out to an early 12-point lead.
Aaron Zinnerman, who led the Little Giants with 16 points, drilled two early three-point baskets before finishing 3-of-4 from beyond the arc and 6-of-12 from the field overall.
Derek Bailey tossed in 15 points with three treys in 31 minutes of court time.
Brian Shelbourne was the third Wabash player to tally double digits in the scoring column, shooting 4-of-7 from the field and 3-of-5 from the free throw line for 11 points.
The Little Giants pushed their lead to 15 points late in the first half on a three-pointer by freshman
Kasey Oetting, but the Crimson Wave scored the next seven points to make it a 33-25 Wabash advantage at halftime. Oetting and Bailey opened the second half with quick baskets to stretch the advantage to 13. An 8-0 run by Calumet toward the midway point of the final period got the Crimson Wave to within five.
Calumet rallied one final time with less than seven minutes remaining in the contest to cut the lead to three points. Zinnerman drove for a layup to spark a 6-0 run that was capped by a put-back reverse layup by
Nick Curosh for his only points of the game to secure the Wabash victory.
Curosh led Wabash with seven boards. Shelbourne dished out three assists.
The Little Giants shot 40 percent from the field for the game, including a 13-for-26 effort in the opening period.
Wabash (1-0) returns to Chadwick Court on Sunday for a 3 p.m. tipoff against St. Xavier of Illinois.
