Bailey Named MVP After Leading Wabash to Tourney Title

Box Score
GREENCASTLE, Ind. — Derek Bailey scored 19 points to take tournament Most Valuable Player honors and led Wabash to a 62-47 win over DePauw in the championship of the Mike Rokicki Community vs. Cancer Challenge.

Bailey was joined by teammate Aaron Zinnerman on the all-tournament team. Zinnerman scored 13 points and had five assists in the game.

The Little Giants shot over 50% from the field for the second straight night, including an amazing 15 of 20 performance in the second half. Wabash connected for six three pointers in the game and were perfect from the charity stripe.

Assistant Coach Billy Powers was happy with the win, “The starters definitely got things going in the beginning of the second half, they really turned up the intensity and moved the ball around to really explode as a team.”

The teams were tied at 24 heading into the halftime break before Bailey scored seven straight points to build up a 6 point lead just two and a half minutes into the half. From that point forward, Wabash would never look back. A pair of free throws from Zinnerman put the Little Giants up 15 with just under two minutes to play to make the final margin of the contest.

Freshman Kasey Oetting had another solid outing, scoring 9 points. Brian Shelbourne had eight points, seven rebounds, and five assists. Jordan Surenkamp chipped in seven points, Nick Curosh had four points, and Lawrence Milton added two points to round out scoring for the Little Giants.

Wabash held DePauw to their lowest scoring output of the season. This was the fourth straight game the Little Giants have held their opponents under sixty points.

Barry Flynn had 13 points to lead the Tigers in scoring. Sean Haseley also scored eleven points in the effort. DePauw dropped to 3-1 on the season. The win also marked the second straight year Wabash ended an undefeated start for their archrival.

With the victory Wabash improved to 4-0 on the season. While DePauw is now a member of the North Coast Athletic Conference, Sunday's game did not count in the conference standings.

Wabash returns to action on Wednesday night when they travel to Terre Haute to take on Rose-Hulman. Start time on Wednesday is 7:30 p.m.
