Wabash Improves to 5-0 with Win at Rose

Box Score
Senior Derek Bailey scored a career-high 26 points to lead the Wabash College basketball team to a 58-44 victory Wednesday night at Rose-Hulman. The Little Giants improve to 5-0 for the season with the victory.

Both teams entered the contest with spotless 4-0 records, but Bailey's hot shooting and good defense by Wabash kept the Little Giants perfect for the year. Bailey equalled his career-high with six field goals and and four three-points baskets in addition to hitting 10-of-12 free throws.

Wabash trailed by a point in the opening minute of the ball game before going on a 10-4 run to open up a seven-point lead. Rose would eventually cut the lead back to one point midway through the first half, but another solid run gave the Little Giants a 21-16 lead in the low-scoring first half.

Bailey scored eight first-half points before exploding in the final period. He scored 18 second-half points, going 4-of-8 from the field and 8-for-10 from the free throw stripe. Fellow senior Aaron Zinnerman added another seven points in the final period after being held to two points in the first half to push the Wabash lead to as many as 18 points with 5:21 left to play. Rose would get as close as 11 points in the final minute, but free throws by Evan Johnson and a final trey by Bailey locked up the win.

The Little Giants held Rose to 31 percent from the field for the contest (14-of-45) and 4-of-12 from beyond the arc (33 percent). Wabash outrebounded the home squad 35-23. Nick Curosh, the North Coast Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week, grabbed a season-high 12 rebounds. Zinnerman and Brian Shelbourne each handed out two of the Little Giants' eight assists.

Wabash opens conference play this Saturday with a 3 p.m. tipoff at Denison University.
